A coronavirus pandemic disrupted the N.C.A.A. Division I men’s basketball tournament for the first time Saturday when a scheduled game between No. 7-seeded Oregon and No. 10-seeded Virginia Commonwealth was declared uncontested due to problems with the virus.
V.C.U. said in a statement Saturday night that it had received several positive tests in the past 48 hours.
We are devastated for our players and coaches, VCU coach Mike Rhoades said in a statement, noting that the team has been tested every day for the past three weeks.
In a statement issued Saturday, the N.C.A.A. basketball committee expressed regret that VCU players and coaches were unable to participate in the tournament for which they had qualified.
According to tournament rules, Oregon will automatically enter the tournament and face off against the winner of the match between No. 2 Iowa and Grand Canyon, the no. 15.
A virus threatens to end the tournament, which is in full swing due to the pandemic in Indiana, before it has even started. Last week, teams from the Atlantic Coast and Big 12 conferences – Duke, Kansas and Virginia – withdrew from tournaments because of a virus.
N.C.A.A. officials have imposed significant restrictions on players, coaches and officials to prevent the virus from entering the men’s tournament, the college sports giant that accounts for most of the league’s annual revenue. The number of spectators at the tournament was limited, the teams were largely confined to their hotels in Indianapolis, and many people associated with the tournament faced daily virus checks.
In addition, members of the travel group had to test negative for the virus for seven consecutive days before being allowed to travel to Indiana.
But in an interview Monday, Mark Emmert, president of the N.C.A.A., admitted the issues were introduced during the tournament, which began on the 5th. April is supposed to be over.
The first goal is to not have serious medical problems, Emmert said. That’s not to say that we don’t need to attract teams or that everyone can achieve a positive result – we’re not naive about that, but there have never been any major medical issues.

When Rick Pitino and 15th-ranked Iona led midway through the second half against Alabama on Saturday, it looked like the Gaels had everything they needed to make a run for high ground for the second time in the tournament.
On Friday, no. 15 Oral Roberts the ninth number to beat the No. 2 seed by decimating Ohio State. And in 1987, Pitino coached Billy Donovan and Providence to a victory over second-seeded Alabama in the regional semifinals.
But there shouldn’t be another epic takeover. Alabama’s Herbert Jones scored 20 points, grabbed six rebounds and handed out two assists in the Southeastern Conference tournament final and regular season at Iona, 68-55, in Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The Crimson Tide will take on the winner between no. 7 UConn and no. 10 Maryland in the East Region.
Iona has lost 14 consecutive games in the N.C.A.A. tournament, including one victory that was overturned.
Iona led 42-40, but the Gaels froze the offense and Alabama went on a 20-6 run to take a 60-48 lead.
Iona still got to 62-55, but Alabama guard Javon Quinerly (11 points) put them ahead with a jump shot. Alabama’s bench outscored Jonah’s 23-8.
Isaiah Ross was the top scorer in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with 19 points, while Asante Gist tallied 16. Gist also played on the Iona team that lost in the first round in 2019 and was hoping for an upset this time around.
Pitino, 68, became the third coach to lead five programs in the tournament this year. Arriving in March after being fired by Louisville in 2017, he and his staff had to rebuild the team and recruit eight new players, including several internationals led by freshman Nellie Jr. Joseph from Nigeria, who finished with six points and six rebounds.
Despite four interruptions from the coronavirus this season, including 51 days, the longest in the country, Pitino has made the most of his team in his first year at the helm.

Creighton, seeded fifth, against Santa Barbara, seeded 12th, 63-62. The Blues were favorites in this match, but it all came down to the final minutes when the Gauchos managed to keep the score low.
After trailing by 8 points in the first half, Creighton led 34-30 at halftime.
It got really wild in the second half. Creighton took a 10-point lead with 13 minutes to play, but Santa Barbara fought back led by guard Jacory McLaughlin, who contributed 13 points and 7 assists.
The game came down to the final minute when Christian Bishop took two free throws for the Jayhawks with 16 seconds left to seal the victory. He finished with 15 points. Marcus Zegarowski led Creighton with 17 points and eight assists.
Creighton coach Greg McDermott, who has been with the team for 11 years, was suspended for his final regular season game for making racist remarks to his players, but he was allowed to return to the Big East tournament and practice Saturday. This is the Bluejays’ first win at the N.C.A.A. Tournament since 2014.
Creighton will announce the winner of Virginia-Ohio on Monday.

After a dramatic 53-52 win over Wichita State in Thursday’s game, Drake faced a tougher challenge against Southern California, holding a 40-37 lead at halftime.
The good news is that the Bulldogs are 20-1 when Shankwan Hemphill is in the starting lineup, and he could come off the bench in this tournament since he suffered a foot injury in February.
In the first half against the United States, Hemphill scored six points in 16 minutes. He finished Thursday with 3 points, a steal and four rebounds.
He was leading the team with 14.1 points per game when he fell. The Bulldogs are certainly hoping for a big hit tonight, especially in the second half.

The N.C.A.A. has introduced a new weight class for the women’s basketball tournament to overcome a storm of condemnation for the differences between this event in Texas and the men’s tournament in Indiana.
In a tweet on Saturday, the N.C.A.A. spoke of improved preparations for the women’s tournament, which officials said had been planned for some time before the round of 16. A critical offensive this week forced the league to apologize and speed up the schedule.
Sedona Prince, the Oregon attacker who drew attention to the Texas situation with her video of the original, much smaller lineup, applauded the change.
Guess what, guys? We have a gym! Prince said in a video posted on social media Saturday. We have a ton of extra dumbbells. Look at all these squat racks and things we want to do.
And she thanked N.C.A.A. officials for responding to complaints before the tournament, which begins Sunday.
We appreciate you, she said. Thank you for that.
Although frustrations over the training equipment are subsiding, the N.C.A.A. has also faced criticism over its decision to use rapid antigen tests in the women’s tournament, rather than the polymerase chain reaction tests used in the men’s tournament, which are considered the gold standard for diagnosing infectious diseases.
Mark Emmert, president of the N.C.A.A., said Friday that the union has full confidence in all the medical protocols that have been established.

The one-on-one basketball games between brothers Isaiah and Evan Mobley stopped when they were in high school.
For most of his childhood, Isaiah, who was about 20 months older, was the more impressive of the two. But in high school, Evan caught up with him, at least in terms of size.
Evan didn’t just want to beat his brother once or twice for luck and hope. Winning was cool, he said, but I wanted to win the way I wanted to win. I wanted to win in a way that was solid and not closely tied to the game.
Sometimes their father, Eric Mobley, would call the ball and tell them to go before the games got too physical. Evan would be hot, just angry at the world, Eric said. And Isaiah was bigger, stronger, so I didn’t want them to fight or anything. Then sometimes I let them come in and mix it up a little bit, because they have to figure it out.
They never settled it. It gets too uncomfortable, says Isaiah, 21. But instead of competing against each other, the brothers are teammates at the University of Southern California, where Eric still coaches them as an assistant. The team is a throwback, with the Friars anchoring a strong defense and providing a solid inside game.
A late deficit caused U.S. to miss its first regular-season championship since 1984-85, but the Trojans closed out the Pac-12 Conference with a dramatic victory over in-state rival U.C.L.A.
Quietly, the Trojans consistently sew success when they open the N.C.A.A. tournament Saturday against Drake.

Rick Pitino! Rick Pitino! – is back in the N.C.A. Tournament.
You might remember him. He has reached the Final Four seven times. He won national titles at Kentucky and Louisville, although the latter’s victory was eventually reversed. He had a mediocre run in the N.B.A., where he coached Patrick Ewing, who took Georgetown to the tournament.
And Pitino, who had been exiled to Greece to play basketball after the Louisville scandal, suddenly found himself in a whirlwind as well. A week ago, the 15th-seeded Iona Gaels defeated Fairfield 60-51 to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament and have a chance at a national championship.
Despite its place in the rankings, history suggests that the Gaels, who have a formidable defense, can provide some headaches: In the 21 years that teams led by Pitino have played in the N.C.A.A. tournament, all but four have reached the first round.
Jonah’s goal today: No. 2 Alabama, trying to prove that football schools are also very good at basketball.
After finishing first in the N.C.A.A. Tournament since 2002, the Crimson Tide has been successful in the regular season and Southeastern Conference Tournament under Alabama coach Nate Oates. Herb Jones, the SEC Player of the Year, was the most feared guard in the league this season, leading the team in rebounds, steals and blocks.
Expect Alabama to take a lot of 3-point shots: She has made more than 800 attempts this season, placing her second nationally. John Petty Jr, a senior defender from Huntsville, Alabama, leads the team.

Kansas, ranked No. 3, played its first game in nine days as the team tested positive for coronavirus. It was a bumpy ride, but the Jayhawks’ second half was enough to get them to the second round.
Kansas defeated No. 14 Eastern Washington by 93-84. It was the 14th. Victory in the N.C.A.A. men’s tournament for the Jayhawks under Bill Self.
The Jayhawks had a rough start, and the Eagles took advantage of it. It was the play of Tanner and Jacob Grove in the first half that led to the Eagles. The Friars scored 58 points and 14 rebounds with 65.5 percent shooting.
The Jayhawks looked tired in the first half, resting in folding chairs on the sideline, as if the Eagles were pumping all their energy into them. Meanwhile, the Eagles were making bigger and bigger leaps from one game to the next. Eastern Washington led Kansas 46-38 at halftime.
The Jayhawks started the second half more aggressively, taking a 12-point lead with just under five minutes to go. Eastern Washington has had a difficult time recovering. David McCormack scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half. Five Jayhawk players scored 12 or more points.
Kansas will take on the winner of the Southern California-Drake game on Monday.

Creighton is 3-3 in its last six games, despite being favourites in five of them. Saturday’s opponent, 12th-ranked UC Santa Barbara, ranked No. 1, has played just three games while winning all Big West contests.
The Gauchos have won 18 of their last 19 games and are headed in a very different direction than their opponents in recent weeks.
It’s a recipe for an upside choice that’s becoming so popular it’s hardly considered a surprise (Creighton is 7½ point favorite in this contest).
One of Creighton’s last three defeats was a crushing 25-point defeat against Georgetown in the Big East title game.
In that title game, they made 9-of-34 three-point shots. When they’re cold, they’re cold, and U.C.S.B. has the 15th lowest 3-point opponent percentage in the country.

North Carolina-Greensboro, ranked No. 13, never took the lead Saturday against Florida State, ranked No. 4. Most of the goals were scored by two players. It made less than a third of its shots.
But make no mistake, if you think Florida State was dominant, they just survived, 64-54.
Although Florida State led by 16 points with seven minutes left in the first half, the lead was erased late in the game when the Seminoles led by just one point with five minutes left.
FSU used the final five minutes to score 13 points, including six points. North Carolina-Greensboro had only four during the same period.
FSU’s next opponent, which had 17 points scored by Rayquan Gray on Saturday, is fifth-ranked Colorado, which is ranked No. 1 in the country. 12 Georgetown.

Patrick Ewing coached Georgetown to the N.C.A.A. tournament for the first time since 2015, but the Hoyas didn’t stay long. McKinley Wright IV and Colorado made sure of it.
Wright, a senior point guard who is feared in the Pac-12 but not highly regarded nationally, recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points, 13 assists and no turnovers. Georgetown, the No. 5 ranked team, failed to live up to expectations in a 96-73 loss at the famed Hinkle Fieldhouse and was sent to Georgetown.
Buffalo will face off against the winner of the East Region matchup between No. 4 Florida State and no. 13 U.N.C.-Greensboro.
Wright became the first player since 2008 with at least 13 assists and no turnovers in the N.C.A.A. Tournament.
I’m glad the country got to see McKinley Wright, U.C.L.A. coach Mick Cronin said before the game. He’s the best guard in the land nobody’s ever heard of.
Saturday, no. 12 Oregon State no. 5 Tennessee, and it was thought that Georgetown would do the same.
But Colorado (23-8) also got 24 points from junior Jabari Walker and 18 points from senior D’Shawn Schwartz, who hit 10 of 12 three-pointers. As a team, Colorado made 16 of 25 shots from beyond the arc.
Kudus Wahab led the Hoyas with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Buffalo made 11 three-pointers and went into halftime with a 47-23 lead.
After winning four games in four days last week to win the Big East tournament, Ewing and the Hoyas hoped to continue their winning ways in Indianapolis. Ewing received congratulations from Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Charles Barkley.
Ewing is one of four Hall of Fame players coaching in the N.C.A.A. tournament. But while he led the Hoyas to three N.C.A.A. championships and a title (1984) as a player, Ewing continues to build the program as a coach.
The good news is that Aminu Muhammad and Ryan Mutombo, son of Georgetown legend Dikembe Mutombo, who was in the stands at Indianapolis, will be coming to Georgetown next season.

I hope you’ve read this excellent essay by one of our colleagues, Ken Plutnicki, about the 37-year-old men’s basketball record at stake in this tournament.
Harvard’s 1983-84 team shot 82.2% from the free throw line. Actually, you need to be more specific – Harvard hit 82.18% (535-651) in an era with no 3-point shots and no shot clock.
Plutnicki was on that team, and he and his former teammates chased two teams in that NCAA tournament: Oral Roberts (15th) and Colorado (5th).
Oral Roberts was well on his way to breaking the record at the start of the tournament. He defeated No. 2 seeded Ohio State on Friday, but his free throw percentage dropped slightly in the process, just 14 of 18. Right now, before the Golden Eagles play seventh-seeded Florida State on Sunday night, they stand at 82.17 percent (378 of 460), one-hundredth of a percentage point behind Harvard.
Colorado, meanwhile, entered the tournament with an 82.16 percent success rate (419 of 510). And in the first half against Georgetown, with the Buffaloes leading 47-23, Eli Parquet and McKinley Wright hit all four of Colorado’s free throws, bringing the statistic to 82.3%.
If Colorado wins, the record will not be set today. When I said this to Plutnitsky last night after Oral Roberts’ victory, he made it clear that he had been paying attention.

One thing to keep in mind about the N.C.A.A. tournament is that the teams are preparing for opponents they have never seen before. If San Diego State looked last night against Syracuse like it hadn’t seen a zone defense all year, it was because it hadn’t. Georgetown is getting a lesson in the McKinley Wright skills that Pac-12 schools have been teaching for four years.

The Bulldogs are seeded first and enter the tournament 26-0. They are the first team since Kentucky in 2015 to remain undefeated in the tournament. Kentucky, which had nine future N.B.A. players on its roster this season, lost 38-0 to Wisconsin in the national semifinals at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Before that, Jerry Tarkanian’s Nevada-Las Vegas Running Rebels were the last undefeated team to reach the Final Four in 1991, before losing to Christian Lettner, Bobby Hurley and Duke in the national semifinals at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.
To become the first undefeated champion since Indiana in 1976, the Bulldogs must win six times in the next three weeks – including in Indianapolis – starting Saturday night against Norfolk State, which beat Appalachian State 54-53 on Thursday.
The Mark Few-led Gonzaga team has three finalists for the John R. Wooden Award as the nation’s best player in Corey Kispert, Jaylen Suggs and Drew Timme, while the team’s fourth-best player, Joel Ayaii, had the program’s first-ever triple double.
If Gonzaga wins six in a row, it’ll be 32-0, like Bob Knight’s team at Indiana.

Georgetown must have won a lot to be in this position. The Hoyas beat Creighton in the Big East title game in a 24-point battle, and before that they beat Villanova.
None of this should have happened.
According to ESPN and Yahoo, Georgetown is the No. 12 seed to win the first round over fifth-seeded Colorado State.
Considering that the Hoyas will finish in last place in Big East competition, this run is not just due to some missteps in the conference tournament. It was also an important event for Patrick Ewing, who said the race helped him gain respect as a coach.
Georgetown’s three-pointers are dangerous, and D.C.’s Dante Harris has emerged as a rising star in a few games after Jaylen Harris left the program.
More than 40 percent of the ESPN and Yahoo brackets gave Georgetown the win Saturday – and about 14 percent even placed the Hoyas in the Sweet 16.
