The NBA playoffs have already begun, and everyone is waiting for the NBA Finals between the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers. The ultimate battle between the super teams will thrill fans around the world and add a new chapter to the intense playoff battles.
In the playoffs, we see some of the best players in history score in crucial games. When the Lakers and Nets meet in the NBA Finals, the only three starters will be among the top 25 scorers in the playoffs. A total of 26 players have scored at least 3,000 points or more in the playoffs during their careers.
Here are these players, ranked by level.
3000+ career playoff points
James Worthy, James Harden, Manu Ginobili, Dennis Johnson, Kevin McHale, Paul Pierce.
Worthy, the former No. 1 overall pick in 1982, struggled to get to 3,022 points in the playoffs. Worthy was a three-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers. Worthy was so tenacious that he was nicknamed James in the big game. James Harden led Worthy to a career-high 3030 playoff points over the weekend. By the end of the playoffs, Harden could be above 20th overall.
The Spurs have three players in the top 25, and it all starts with Manu Ginobili’s career-high 3,054 points. Ginobili was part of four championship teams. That’s not so bad for the former 57th pick.
In front of Ginobili is Dennis Johnson with 3,180 points. Johnson was a great defensive player in the 1980s on Boston Celtics teams. With Larry Bird doing most of the offensive work, Johnson was the third option, but he performed very well in the playoffs with the Supersonics and Suns.
Two more Celtics to close out this series: Paul Pierce (3,180) and Kevin McHale (3,182). McHale won three championships with the Celtics, while Pierce only won one championship in 2008, but was named NBA Finals MVP.
Over 3,500 playoff points in career
Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Scotty Pippen, Dirk Nowitzki, Magic Johnson, Hakeem Olajuwon, John Havlicek, Larry Bird, Dwayne Wade
That list includes legends like Wilt Chamberlain (3,607) and Elgin Baylor (3,623). Chamberlain once averaged 28.0 points and 30.2 rebounds in a playoff series and still lost. He still won two championships, one with Philadelphia and one with the Lakers. Baylor averaged 38.1 points per game in 1961 and followed that up with 38.6 points in the 1962 playoffs.
Scottie Pippen scored 3,642 points alongside Michael Jordan and won six championships with the Chicago Bulls. Dirk Nowitzki was a regular playoff contender for the Mavericks, leading the team to 15 playoff appearances and an NBA championship in 2011.
Magic Johnson (3,701) could have ended his career as the all-time leader in playoff points had he not tested positive for HIV and retired early. Hakeem Olajuwon (3,755) narrowly outscored the big Magic in his only season in Toronto after leading the Rockets all those years, including two championships in 1994 and 1995.
Two former Celtics lead the rear of this list: John Havlicek (3,776) and Larry Bird (3,897). Both were championship players, leaders in franchise history in many categories, and well-known names in the Boston community. Speaking of names: Dwayne Wade (3,954) is one of the greatest in Miami Heat history, with three championships in his career.
Over 4,000 points in the playoffs
Tony Parker, Kevin Durant, Jerry West, Julius Erving, Karl Malone.
Tony Parker (4,045) barely fits into this category, but does collect a large number of titles and makes it to the playoffs every season from 2002 to 2018 with the San Antonio Spurs. Parker was part of a group of three that won four championships. Just above Parker is Kevin Durant, who ranks second among all active players in playoff points. Durant (4,075) still has a few years to move up on the all-time list, as he has nearly 400 fewer points in his career than Jerry West, who is ninth.
West, who could be the top scorer on this list, once averaged 40.6 points per game in a playoff series in 1965. West’s game against Bill Russell is a not-to-be-missed TV event before West ends his career with 4,457 playoff points.
Just above West is Julius Erving (4,580). Erving averaged 27.9 points per game for the 1974 championship team and then helped the Nets to their second championship in 1976, averaging 34.7 points per game. When he left the ABA to join the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA, he averaged more than 20 points in the playoffs for six consecutive seasons.
The great Karl Malone (4,761) rounds out this list – he is seventh on the list. Malone never won an exclusive championship ring, but he helped the Utah Jazz reach the NBA Finals multiple times, including back-to-back seasons in 1997 and 1998. In total, Malone helped the Jazz reach the playoffs for 18 consecutive seasons from 1986 to 2003.
5,000 points in the playoffs
Tim Duncan, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan
Duncan, the third and final member of the Spurs’ Big Three, scored 5,000 points after winning his fifth championship in 2014. Duncan’s 5,172 playoff points are the most in Spurs history. Duncan played in every playoff game for the Spurs from 1999 to 2016, with the exception of the 2000 playoffs due to a meniscus injury.
Shaquille O’Neal (5,250) put up one of the best numbers we’ve ever seen in the playoffs during the Lakers’ three-game championship race. Shaq averaged 30.7 points in 2000, 30.4 in 2001 and 28.5 in 2002. Former teammate Kobe Bryant is fourth with 5,640 points and has one more championship than Shaq, who has five at the end of their careers.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the third-best player of all time with 5,762 points and six championships. In his first season, Abdul-Jabbar averaged 35.2 points per game. He averaged over 30 points in three other seasons. By the end of his career, Abdul-Jabbar had broken Wilt Chamberlain’s scoring record and was the top scorer of all time.
This record was broken by the greatest basketball player of all time. Michael Jordan won six Finals, won the NBA Finals MVP award six times and finished his career as the all-time leader in playoff points with 5,987. Had Jordan not retired twice, that record might still have been his.
7,000 playoff points in career
LeBron James
LeBron is not only the reigning top scorer of the playoffs, he is also the top scorer of all time with 7,509 points in his career. LeBron has a chance to score over 8,000 points in the next two years. If the Lakers make the playoffs this year, it will certainly help him.
Critics like to say that LeBron has played in the most playoff games of all time. LeBron had played 260 games when the playoffs began. At the end of the day, we have to appreciate what LeBron has given us, which is reaching the NBA Finals in eight of nine seasons, as well as eight consecutive Finals appearances. That kind of workload for a player eventually wears off, and that’s what we’re seeing this year as the Lakers are in 7th place.
That makes LeBron the only player in his career to surpass 6,000 and 7,000 points in the playoffs. For that, he should be considered one of the two best players in history. If LeBron wins more championships, you can start talking about the greats.
