Jose Mourinho is packing his bags after being taken out by Spurs.

Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Tottenham after just 17 months at the head of the club.

The Portuguese replaced Mauricio Pochettino as Spurs manager in November 2019 and led the club to sixth place in the Premier League last season.

They are currently in seventh place with two points from their last three league games, having been relegated from the Europa League in March.

The Spurs meet on the 25th. April in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.

Tottenham were one of six Premier League clubs to announce their entry into the new European Super League on Sunday, but it had nothing to do with Mourinho’s resignation.

Mourinho’s coaches – Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Serra – were also sacked.

Jose and his coaching staff have helped us through some of the most difficult times in the club’s history, said Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy. Jose is a true professional who showed great resilience during the pandemic.

Personally, I enjoyed working with him and I regret that it didn’t turn out the way we both thought it would.

He will always be welcome here and we would like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.

Jose Mourinho leaves Tottenham’s training ground for the final time.

Mourinho, who has been in charge of Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Porto this season, has suffered 10 league defeats in a single season for the first time in his coaching career.

No Premier League team has dropped more points from a winning position this season than Spurs, who have dropped 20.

Mourinho’s last game at Everton on Friday ended in a 2-2 draw.

Former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason, who worked in the club’s academy, starts first team training on Monday.

What went wrong?

Mourinho was not the most popular appointment, but his standing with Spurs fans has increased due to his appearances in the Amazon documentary All or Nothing, which chronicled the club’s 2019-20 season. And with his Instagram posts, he’s become something of a social media star.

With Gareth Bale on loan, Spurs have started the season promisingly, including a 6-1 win over Mourinho’s former club Manchester United at Old Trafford.

With a 2-0 home win over Arsenal in early December, three-time Premier League winner and two-time Champions League winner Mourinho became only the second Spurs manager in history to win his first two derbies in North London.

They were at the top for a while, but fell back to second place later in the month due to a loss against Liverpool.

Since then, Spurs have won seven of their 19 league games and lost eight.

In February they were knocked out of the FA Cup by a 5-4 defeat in the quarter-final against Everton, conceding five goals for the first time since 2010 under Mourinho.

On 14 March they were beaten 2-1 at Arsenal and four days later they were eliminated in the Europa League after losing the first leg 2-2 to Dinamo Zagreb.

Two weeks ago Mourinho, who has built a reputation as a masterful tactician and defender and former Fifa World Coach of the Year, refused to take responsibility for Spurs’ points loss.

Same coach, different players, he said, noting how good his teams are, which generally set the tone defensively.
