Sport climbing is a pretty unique sport that many people have never heard of. Despite all the uncertainty and uncertainty of the climbing world, we are hoping that the sport will be included in the 2020 Olympics. To get the word out, we recommend posting a story about the sport in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, or on the website of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) www.ifsc.org .
This summer, during the Olympic Games in Brazil, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that climbing would be included for the first time at the Olympic Games. This is big news – sport climbing is an exciting, fast-paced form of climbing in which athletes scale a series of bolted routes using only a rope and a set of climbing gear.
Although the IOC recently announced that sport climbing is to be included in the 2020 Sydney Olympic Games, the sport has a rich history that stretches back to the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany. The discipline was originally introduced at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Mexico, where it was included in the first ever Olympic Games for climbing. Since then, the sport has grown in popularity worldwide, and now has its own world governing body, the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC).

Climbing is the last of the new Olympic sports to compete in Tokyo 2020, with competition beginning on Tuesday.
Mountain biking, skateboarding, and surfing have already made their debuts, so the emphasis in the Aomi Urban Sports Park now shifts to the walls.
We’ll walk you through all you need to know about the sport, from how it works to which stars to keep an eye on.
What is the definition of sport climbing?
With athletes climbing walls utilizing fixed hand and foot grips in three categories, it’s an event that perfectly fits the new Olympic slogan ‘faster, higher, stronger, together.’
When is it going to happen?
The men’s competition will begin on August 3 and conclude on August 5. The women’s competition starts on August 4th, with the finals on August 6th.
What sports are included in the Olympics?
In Tokyo, two gold medals are up for grabs in mixed events for both men and women.
There will be forty climbers in action, 20 each competition, with each country permitted a maximum of two climbers per competition.
Climbing competitions typically consist of three distinct categories – speed, bouldering, and lead – but for the sport’s Olympic debut, all three have been merged into one massive event.
Speed will be a distinct event at the 2024 Paris Games, alongside a combined bouldering/lead competition.
What is the relationship between the three disciplines?
Speed: Two participants race to the top of a 15-meter high wall with a five-degree overhang and must stop the clock by hitting a buzzer. Every competition follows the same path.
Bouldering is a sport in which climbers take turns completing routes, or problems, on a 4.5m structure in the fewest number of tries possible. They are allowed to make as many tries as they want within a certain time limit. The number of completely or partly completed questions determines the score. Between qualifying and finals, the difficulties are reset, and climbers are given two minutes to examine the problem before the finals.
Lead: In a single try, competitors must climb as high as they can up a 15m wall in six minutes. Between qualifying and the finals, the course is altered, and competitors are permitted to look around before the finals.
Janja Garnbret of Slovenia has won three world championships in a row.
What is the procedure for an Olympic competition?
Qualification
- Each climber participates in three categories: speed, bouldering, and lead climbing.
- Climbers have two tries at speed, one on each lane, with the fastest time being recorded.
- Bouldering requires climbers to tackle four boulders in a five-minute time restriction per boulder.
- Climbers compete one at a time in lead, and their height is recorded.
- The climbers’ placings in all three disciplines are multiplied to establish their ranking, and the top eight climbers proceed to the finals.
Finals
- Before each climber competes in speed, bouldering, and lead – in that sequence – the scores are reset.
- Climbers participate in three elimination races to establish their position in the speed category.
- Climbers in bouldering take turns attempting boulder one before going on to boulder two, and vice versa for the third and final boulder. There is a four-minute time restriction each boulder.
- Climbers compete one at a time in lead, and their height is recorded.
- The climbers’ positions in all three disciplines are multiplied to establish their ranking.
Adam Ondra has won the world championship five times.
Who are the celebrities?
Shauna Coxsey is the sole British athlete to qualify, and she will compete in her last competition following the Games.

In the men’s event, Adam Ondra is the one to watch.
The Czech is a five-time world champion, but she just recovered from a shoulder injury and has a speed deficiency.
