Wisconsin is a team of hard-working and scrappy players, but they also have some star power on the court. Their senior outside hitter Brittany Hrynko was once ranked as one of the top 10 volleyball players in the world and their head coach Greg Knapp has been with them since day 1. The Badgers pushed Louisville to five sets before coming out on top, winning 3-1 over the Cardinals

THE CITY OF COLUMBUS, OHIO — Dani Busboom Kelly, the head coach of the Louisville Volleyball team, was voted national coach of the year and received a contract extension on Thursday. What she really wanted, a win in the national semifinals and a chance to play for the NCAA championship on Saturday, didn’t happen. The No. 1 seed Cardinals dropped their first match of the season in a five-set thriller against No. 4 seed Wisconsin.

In Saturday’s NCAA championship, the Badgers will face Nebraska, another Big Ten juggernaut (ESPN2, 7:30 p.m. ET). Busboom Kelly would have faced her old mater for the final if Louisville had won.

Busboom Kelly, who won an NCAA championship as a player at Nebraska in 2006, said this near-perfect season has taught her a lot.

Busboom Kelly, who was seeking to become the first female head coach to lead a women’s volleyball team to a Division I title, stated, “I always aspired to coach a team that fully understood what it needed to be in this position.” “It’s simply been incredible to see this team not just work, but work well and have fun while inspiring a community and a university to embrace this program.”

“This season taught me the importance of being true to myself. You can have it all: you can be terrific, win a lot, love each other, and develop a program.”

Busboom Kelly has accomplished this in a short period of time at Louisville. She guided the Cardinals to their first volleyball final four, first NCAA No. 1 seed, and first No. 1 ranking in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll in only her fifth season.

On Sept. 18, she also guided Louisville to a 3-0 win against Nebraska. However, there will be no rematch on Saturday at Nationwide Arena. Nebraska, a No. 10 seed, will be vying for their sixth NCAA Championship, having last won in 2017. This season, the Huskers went 25-7, dropping three games in a row at one point.

After the Huskers’ 16-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22 win against No. 3 seed Pitt in Thursday’s second semifinal, senior Lauren Stivrins remarked, “We’ve sort of figured it out now.” “We’re competing more aggressively than we have in recent weeks. It’s everything to be able to play with this squad on another day.”

For the fourth time in program history and the second time in the last three years, Wisconsin will compete in the NCAA championship game. The Badgers have previously lost title games in 2000, 2013, and 2019.

Wisconsin won both of their regular-season games against Nebraska: 3-0 on Oct. 27 and 3-1 on Nov. 26. On Thursday, the Badgers won their 30th game of the season.

Wisconsin coach Kelly Sheffield stated after the 25-23, 15-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-9 match, “The quality of play by both teams and the heart by both teams was really remarkable.” “We were quite lucky to come out on top of that.”

Busboom Kelly has a 115-30 overall record and a 74-14 ACC record in her time with the Cardinals.

Busboom Kelly, a Nebraska native, played for her alma mater from 2003 to 2006 and subsequently served as an assistant coach during the Huskers’ 2015 national championship season. She arrived in Louisville with a strong resume for the 2017 season and made an immediate impression. Louisville improved from 12-18 in 2016 to 24-7 in her first season, and in the 2019 Sweet 16, the Cardinals defeated then-No. 2 seed Texas.

Busboom Kelly’s new six-year contract, which begins in January, allows her to go to just one institution without penalty: Nebraska, which is led by longstanding coach John Cook.

For the time being, Busboom Kelly seemed to be enjoying her time in Louisville. And her players are appreciative of how far the program has progressed in recent seasons, both for them and for the sport.

“Rhamat Alhassan was my favorite player at Florida following my rookie season. I was watching her play in the final four from my sofa “Anna Stevenson, a fifth-year senior at Louisville, spoke on the 2017 season. “And the idea that I might be that person for someone is insane to me. Never in a million years could I see myself being a part of something like this.”
