The Warriors should not sign Kelly Oubre Jr. and here are 3 reasons.

Kelly Oubre has been a secret weapon for the Washington Wizards for the past 2-plus seasons. At just 22-years-old, he has shown some tremendous value for that organization. The Wizards know he can play at a high level on both ends of the floor, and that he is relatively cheap. But, as we’ve seen with Bradley Beal, the Wizards may not have much room for a wing player that isn’t a starter. With re-signing Marcin Gortat, Markieff Morris, and Otto Porter Jr., they may not be able to afford Oubre’s projected $11 million per year.

The Golden State Warriors will have a decision to make on Kelly Oubre Jr. this summer. Should they bring him back on a cheap deal knowing they have to trade him within the next 2 years? I say no. Here are 3 reasons why.

Even if the Golden State Warriors make the playoffs this year, they will have to settle for their performance last season. The best way to do this is to evaluate the performance of your players, especially new players like Kelly Oubre Jr.

Aubre in particular stands out because he is a great player. However, questions remain about how he will fit into Steve Kerr’s system. With the imminent return of Klay Thompson, and the emergence of other players on the team, Oubre’s future could be in jeopardy.

Honestly, the Warriors and Oubre are better off without each other. Here are three reasons why the Warriors shouldn’t re-contract Kelly Oubre Jr. in free agency.

3. Kelly Oubre Jr is no match for

Oubre’s inconsistency was well described during the regular season. Warriors fans were excited when the team acquired him in November 2020. But everything went wrong from the start. Oubre didn’t do well and never seemed to fit into Steve Kerr’s system for the rest of the season.

While Aubre has gotten better over time, this inconsistent play seems to have become his calling card. He’s certainly not a bad player, but general manager Bob Myers needs to re-evaluate the Aubre Warriors as a whole.

The Oubre case presents the Warriors with an interesting dilemma. If they re-contract him, it will cost them a significant amount of luxury tax. And of course they will have to pay more in the coming years. However, if they let him go, they can’t replace him with a similar player because they would still be over the limit. You can only fill his place with one player, with one small exception.

As it stands, the best option for the Warriors would be to include Oubre in a swap deal to add depth to their roster. According to Bleacher Report, it could be a good deal to contract Dwight Powell and Dorian Finney-Smith and trade them to the Dallas Mavericks.

2. Clay Thompson’s return makes him useless

Remember the Warriors agreed to acquire Oubre in a trade after Clay Thompson was injured and out for the season. That made Oubre a replacement for Thompson. Thompson is guaranteed to return to the team next season. He’s clearly a better player than Oubre on both sides of the ball. More importantly, Thompson knows the Kerr system like the back of his hand.

If the Warriors and Oubre continue their partnership, the 25-year-old will have no choice but to take a seat on the bench. Coach Steve Kerr is not sure Oubre needs the role at this point in his career. He has come a long way to become a true starter in this league and no doubt wants to stay in that role for as long as possible. But that’s not possible with Thompson on the field.

The Warriors also have Jordan Poole, who is developing into a very talented offensive line player.

1. Jordan Poole Rising

Jordan Poole has emerged as one of the best scorers on the bench. And unlike Oubre, the 21-year-old seems comfortable in that role at the moment. He seems to do well as a striker while the starters rest. The best thing about Poole is that the Warriors can still do with him what the team needs, not what he wants.

The reality is that their core group of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green are at the end of their careers. There is no doubt that James Wiseman will soon be a central figure in the team. But as Poole has grown, it has become another important building block.

So getting rid of Oubre in favor of Poole will not only work in the short term, but also in the long term.

The Warriors should probably let Kelly Oubre walk in free agency.. Read more about how old is kelly oubre and let us know what you think.
