Mahela Jayawardene, Sri Lanka – In 31 matches 1016 Runs

The list is dominated by Sri Lankan players and one name that comes up time and again is Mahela Jayawardene.

Jayawardene has scored his 1016 runs in 31 matches, which puts him at number first on our list of best all-time T20 World Cup batsmen. He took part in three T20 World Cups as well as two ICC World Cups between 1996 and 2015. In his 14 matches at the 1999 World Cup, he scored 1127 runs including a tournament-best 175 not out against Zimbabwe.

Chris Gayle, West Indies – In 33 matches 965 runs

Chris Gayle is one of the most feared batsmen in T20 World Cup history. He has scored 965 runs in 33 matches and taken 18 wickets with his off-spin bowling. He is also the only player on the list to have played more than 30 games at this level. Gayle was part of three ICC World Cups as well as six T20 World Cups between 2007 and 2015.

He has scored a total of 2581 runs, including two centuries and 11 fifties, in his 33 matches at the T20 World Cup. He was part of the West Indies side that won the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 title, scoring a tournament-best 72 not out against England in the final.

Tillakaratne Dilshan, Sri Lanka – In 35 matches 897 runs 

Dilshan is one of only three players to score more than 800 runs at this level. He has scored 897 runs, including four centuries and eight fifties, in 35 matches for Sri Lanka at the ICC World T20s. His best performance came against India in 2016 when he scored an unbeaten 78 off just 49 balls including seven sixes and two fours. He was part of the Sri Lankan team that won the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 title, scoring a tournament-best 90 not out against Pakistan in the final.

He also scored a century against India in the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 and took three wickets at an economy rate of 6.30 during the tournament. Lasith Malinga, Sri Lanka – 15 wickets in 35 matches Malinga has been one of Sri Lanka’s most successful bowlers at this level, having taken 15 wickets from 35 matches including four hauls of three or more wickets. He was part of the Sri Lankan team that won the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 title, taking three wickets against Pakistan in the final match to help his side lift their first-ever trophy at this level.

Rohit Sharma, India – In 33 matches 847 runs

Sharma is one of the most prolific batsmen in Twenty20 cricket, having scored 847 runs from 33 matches at an average of 39.62 and a strike rate of 146.54. He has also picked up seven wickets from these games at an economy rate of 7.94 and was named Player of the Tournament during India’s title-winning campaign in 2016.

He has been in good form this year, too, having scored three centuries and five half-centuries in international cricket. Sharma is also the first batsman to score a century in all three formats of the game. He became only the second man after Rohit Sharma to score a Test century in his 100th Test match when he smashed his way to an unbeaten hundred against Australia in Hyderabad earlier this year.

Virat Kohli, India – In 21 matches 845 runs 

Kohli has been an unstoppable force for India in the World Cup. He has scored three centuries and seven half-centuries at an average of 58.87 and a strike rate of 100.5, which is his best in ODIs. The right-handed batsman also holds the record for most runs by any Indian batsman in a single ODI series (547), which he set earlier this year against Australia.

He also became only the second player after AB de Villiers to score 300+ runs in four consecutive bilateral ODI series across two years. Kohli was named Player of the Tournament during India’s title-winning campaign in 2016 when he scored 673 runs from 10 games at an average of 142.

Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh – In 31 matches 698 runs

Shakib Al Hasan is the leading run-scorer in the history of World Cup cricket. The left-handed batsman has scored 698 runs from 31 matches at an average of 35.35, which includes three centuries and seven half-centuries. He was also named Player of the Tournament during Bangladesh’s title-winning campaign in 2011 when he scored 463 runs from 10 games at an average of 56.

His team-mate Tamim Iqbal is the only other Bangladeshi player to have scored more than 500 runs in a World Cup campaign. He scored 545 runs from nine matches in 2015, including two centuries and a half-century. Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka – 695 runs in 28 matches Kumar Sangakkara is one of only six players to have scored 600 or more World Cup runs in a single edition of the tournament. The left-handed batsman has scored 695 runs from 28 matches at an average of 41.

Some of those players are still playing today, while others have retired from international cricket.

But no matter what happens with these players in their careers, they will always be remembered as some of the best in their respective positions throughout history.
