“It all begins with apologies.” Ray Fisher has said that he would not repeat his role as Cyborg or support any Walter Hamada projects until DC and Warner Bros. apologize for their “awful” reaction to the Justice League inquiry. Last July, Fisher accused substitute director Joss Whedon of “gross, aggressive, unprofessional, and totally unacceptable” on-set behavior toward the cast and crew of the superhero ensemble during the Justice League reshoots in 2017. Whedon was also “supported, in many ways,” according to the Cyborg actor, by Justice League producers and then-DC Films executives Geoff Johns and Jon Berg.
Fisher revealed weeks later that Warner Bros. and DC Films parent company WarnerMedia had launched an independent third-party investigation to “get to the heart of the toxic and abusive work environment created during Justice League reshoots,” which took place after original director Zack Snyder stepped down due to a family tragedy. On September 4, Fisher tweeted that Hamada “attempted to throw Joss Whedon and Jon Berg under the bus” in a phone conversation in the hopes that the actor would “relent” on former DC Chief Creative Officer Johns.
When Fisher later tweeted that the President of DC Production “sought to undermine the very real issues of the Justice League investigation,” adding, “I will not participate in any production associated with him,” Hamada, who was appointed president of DC Films in 2018 and was not involved with the production of Justice League, was dubbed the “most dangerous kind of enabler.” That includes The Flash movie, in which Cyborg appeared in a “far bigger than a cameo” role, according to Fisher.
The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Zack Snyder’s Justice League actor reaffirmed that stance during a panel at MEGACON Orlando over the weekend, where Fisher was asked during a fan Q&A what it would take for him to reprise the Cyborg role in the DC Extended Universe:
“That is a difficult question to answer. “I believe that how people spend their money, in the end, decides what happens and does not happen in our industry, especially in comic books and DC,” Fisher remarked, sporting his signature “Borg Life” cap “t-shirt, alluding to his hero, who is half-human and half-machine. “There’s a lot going on behind the scenes for me. Obviously, I’ve not been shy about discussing everything that’s happened over the past year, including the personal and public squabbles I’ve had with Warner Bros. Pictures, Walter Hamada, and the rest of the team.”
When Fisher returned with Snyder for a brief round of extra shooting on Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the long-awaited Snyder Cut was eventually released as a four-hour director’s cut on HBO Max earlier this year, he briefly resumed his Cyborg character for the first time since 2017. Fisher stated in March that he isn’t “averse” to repeating his role as Cyborg, but that “there are other things that need to be handled” before he plays Victor Stone in another DC film.
“For me, I believe it all begins with Warner Bros. issuing an apology. There’s been a lot of very bad things that’s happened, particularly in public “At MEGACON Orlando, Fisher elaborated on that point. “What Walter Hamada and Warner Bros. Pictures tried to do, both professionally and personally, at one of the most pivotal years in the history of mankind is just inexcusable.”
“Do ya’ll remember that time Walter Hamada and @wbpictures tried to destroy a Black man’s credibility, and publicly delegitimize a very serious investigation, with lies in the press?” Fisher tweeted in February, referring to Hamada’s alleged “attempt” to interfere with the Justice League investigation.
“”So, until an apology is made, I will not be supporting any Walter Hamada projects, period,” Fisher said. And it’s difficult for me since I’m a die-hard DC fan. I like these people, but sometimes you have to sacrifice what you enjoy in order to accomplish what is right.”
The Flash is now shooting for a November 4, 2022 release in cinemas, reuniting Justice League co-stars Ezra Miller and Ben Affleck with DCEU newcomers Sasha Calle as Supergirl and Michael Keaton as an alternate-universe Batman.
