FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys plan to deploy Garrett Gilbert as a quarterback against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, according to a source on ESPN.
Gilbert and Cooper Rush had a kind of competition during the training week, although Gilbert took most of the pictures of the first team.
Gilbert, who died on the 12th. October of Cleveland Brownes’ coaching staff will be his first start in the NFL and his first start in any form since playing for Orlando Apollos of the American Football Alliance dissolved in 2019. He joined the 2014 League with the St. Louis. Louis Rams and spent time with the New England Patriots, Auckland Raiders, Carolina Panthers and Brownes.
With newcomer Ben DiNucci struggling to deal with last week’s 23-9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and Andy Dalton’s place on Tuesday/COVID-19’s reserve list, coach Mike McCarthy was determined to put a more experienced strategist in charge of the undefeated Steelmakers.

But Gilbert threw fewer passes in the NFL than DiNucci, who was 21 of 40 for 180 yards against the Eagles. Gilbert 2 from 6 by 40 meters in six performances with the Panthers and Brownes.
McCarthy was looking for more operational commands than DiNucci had indicated, a seventh selection.
He played a lot of quarterbacks, McCarthy said about Gilbert on Friday. This guy became a quarterback. Her father [Gail] was a quarterback. I mean, he knows how to play the positions. There is no lack of trust or know-how. It’s just a matter of buying time and continuity to commit a crime. So, yeah, I think he’s very confident. He’s been like this since the day he arrived.
Gilbert’s six passing attempts are similar to those of a beginner who is not a quarterback and who took his first steps in franchising history. Reggie Collier (1986) and Drew Henson (2004) started for the Cowboys with only six attempts.
From 2017 to 2019, Rush was the reserve quarterback of the Cowboys behind Duck Prescott, but only lost three passes. After the Cowboys signed with Dalton, he was fired and before his release in September, he joined former coach Jason Garrett of the New York Giants.
The cowboys thought they were bringing in Rush after Prescott got hurt, but they chose Gilbert. Rush’s familiarity with the attack and the skills of the players was considered a plus. He also knows attack coordinator Kellen Moore, who was a teammate and coach of Rush.
Despite Gilbert being named as the starting line-up, McCarthy said later in the week that the goal was to get the two quarterbacks ready for the game, which they didn’t do a week ago when they forced DiNucci into action.
Just watch out for all the little things that happen in the game, McCarthy said Friday. I think we have at least two young people who don’t have a lot of playing experience, but they’re both very smart. The game is easy for them. It is rather a matter of synchronization and connection, timing contact and manipulation. That’s what they usually throw away at boot camp. But we’re a little against it, considering the time we have left. And Garrett and Cooper, they know how to play quarterback.
It’s not an ideal quarterback position for the Cowboys as they face the last unbeaten team in the NFL.
This is the third time in a season they have to start with four quarterbacks. In 2001 the cowboys left with Quincy Carter, Anthony Wright, Clint Sterner and Ryan Leaf for the 5-11 finish. In 2015 they started with Tony Romo, Matt Kassel, Brandon Weeden and Moore on their way to a 4-12 goal.
The NFL network reported for the first time on the Gilbert launch plan.
