ATSADERO
The Atascadero Greyhounds football team traveled to San Luis Obispo Friday night to open the Ocean League schedule, but was completely outclassed by Mission Prep and lost 56-6. Atascadero led the Royals 42-0 at halftime. The sophomore scored the Hounds’ only touchdown in the fourth quarter and finished the game with 80 rushing yards on 13 carries.
The Atascadero softball team traveled to Santa Maria on Saturday for a doubleheader with St. Louis. Joseph. The two teams met at St. Joseph’s, but lost in both games 7-3 and 9-1, respectively. The Greyhounds have been trying to bolster the offense all day and are still looking for their next ace, as their starting pitcher of the last four years is now throwing shutouts for the Cal Poly Mustangs. AHS is now 1-3 on the season with their only win against Mission Prep, 4-0.
The Greyhounds’ baseball team is also slow and struggles on offense. However, under coach Joe Davis, Atascadero’s teams started the season late, and with little practice this year and athletes in multiple sports, it may take a while for the offense to get going. Atascadero is 0-3 after a 5-1 defeat against Nipomo on Wednesday.
SLEEP
The Templeton Eagles played their second consecutive game Friday night to start the football season. They hosted the rival Morro Bay Pirates with a 42-0 home win to keep the Coastal Clash trophy at home. For the second consecutive game, quarterback Tyler Kaszczewski and running back Josh Berna combined for over 200 yards on the ground despite missing most of the second half.
Berna rushed for 133 yards on 19 carries and scored three touchdowns, while Kaszewski rushed for 177 yards on just 10 carries. Kaszczewski’s only score came in the second quarter after an 80-yard gallop through the middle of the Pirates’ defense. Not only was Templeton’s offense good, but the defense got valuable playing time and intercepted two passes before the Eagles began the tough Mountain League schedule to close out the season.
Templeton is 2-0 for the season and hosts Arroyo Grande this Friday night. It’s scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
Templeton’s women’s softball team played twice last week to start the season and split the games, beating Pioneer Valley 8-2 on Wednesday and losing 6-5 to Arroyo Grande on Saturday. This weekend’s game against Arroyo Grande was hard to beat in terms of excitement. Arroyo Grande opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the third inning. Templeton immediately responded with four points in the second half. AG added another run in the fourth and Templeton answered in the fifth. For the final frame, the score was five to one. However, Arroyo Grande managed to hit a long ball in the seventh set and eventually won 6-5.

Charlotte Forniss gave up six hits and two earned runs in seven innings, striking out five. Offensively, Bella Backer and Alex Dalen led the way for Templeton with multiple hits and a total of three RBI.
The Templeton Eagles baseball team also opened their season last week with two games, one against Mission Prep and the other against Morro Bay, winning both 14-3. Templeton opened their season Wednesday in San Luis Obispo and won largely thanks to a mammoth fifth inning in which they scored eight runs. The match remained tied until the fifth set.
The Eagles took on the Pirates in their home opener on Saturday and got the win thanks to Merek Hall and Robbie Lardner. Hall was on the ball early and kept the Pirates’ strong lineup, which had scored 30 runs in two games against Atascadero, in check for three innings before he cleared the field for Lardner, who closed out Game 4 of the finale. Hall gave up one hit and no runs and went 4-for-3, while Lardner gave up three hits and one run and recorded seven strikeouts.
The Atascadero athletic teams also kicked off the spring season. On Saturday morning, Atascadero received Templeton. The Templeton boys won 55-18 and the girls lost 35-31. The Eagles’ athletics and football teams overlap, as some of the boys had a memorable weekend. After rushing for 130 yards and three touchdowns Friday night, Berna set a personal record in the 100-yard dash with a time of 11.30. After a night in the trenches, Chase Richards dominated both throwing events, scoring 43’8 in the shot put and 138’5 in the discus throw.
The Eagles swept the Atascadero sprinters on the girls’ side. Merran Grindley showed she is still one of the top sprinters with a time of 13.76 in the 100-meter dash, while Emily Bundy placed first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.11 and Maya Gutierrez won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:14.69.

PASO ROBLES
The Bearcats baseball team opened their season last Saturday and have started the year 3-0. Paso Robles played two games last week. They hosted Taft on Friday night and traveled to Pioneer Valley on Saturday afternoon, winning 12-0 and 9-8, respectively.
Both offenses were strong on Saturday, but the Bearcats were stronger with 14 hit shots in the seven-minute game. Pioneer Valley took a 3-2 lead in the first set, but the Bearcats dropped a pass to the Panthers in the third to take a 9-3 lead and hold it until the final set.

Austin Taylor started and won at PRHS against Pioneer Valley. Taylor gave up seven runs on six hits in 3.5 innings and struckout four. Anthony Garcia came in as a reliever and finished the game with the final 11 outs and a save.
Offensively, Chase Stratman and Brandon Bonham led the way with three hits each. Bonham also recorded two RBI with designated hitter Drew Wade.
The Bearcats softball team played a doubleheader on Saturday and remained in the lead as the offense ran out to 12-3 and 13-4 victories. With Jaden Ralston on rest, pitchers Hannah Chambers and Brooklyn Pesenti return to action this weekend. Both girls have been fantastic in the circle, quickly showing that the Bearcats have the best and deepest pitching rotation.
Pesenti, a sophomore, started the first game of her PRHS career, but she didn’t have to worry as her teammate, Chambers, put the game out of reach, bat in hand. Chambers hit not one, but two home runs in the game, the first a three-run shot and the second a grand slam, giving him a total of six RBI. Pesenti pitched four and one-third innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.
After Herculean tried to stay at the plate in game one, Chambers started pitching in game two and gave up four runs in the second inning, but it wasn’t enough to catch the PRHS offense, which notched 15 hits in one game. While Chambers led the offense in game one, it was first baseman Andy Deason who led the Lady Bearcats in game two. Deason finished the game 4-for-4 with five RBI and a home run.
In the pool, the Paso Robles water polo teams took on the Greyhounds and swept their opponents. They won 12-7 in the boys and 10-6 in the girls. Tre Eade and Raleigh Lowry led the Bearcats’ offense. Eade finished as the top scorer with five goals, while Lowry contributed four.
