Netflix is a popular streaming service, with over 100 million subscribers worldwide. This list is based on the best original films on Netflix.

The best netflix original series are a list of 12 movies that are on Netflix. They are ranked from best to worst with the top three being the most popular.

Netflix has evolved from a DVD rental business to a streaming behemoth that produces original content and has received 36 Academy Award nominations to date. Although some filmmakers favor the theatrical experience over streaming services are wary of the industry shift unfolding in front of our eyes, streaming companies such as Netflix create films of comparable quality to those seen in cinemas.

That isn’t to suggest there isn’t space for both the theatrical experience and streaming distribution; both can live in peace, with Netflix even releasing many of its original films in cinemas before releasing them on their platform. They’ve attracted industry heavyweights like Martin Scorsese, Noah Baumbach, and Bong Joon-ho, and they’re still paving the way in this brave new world of cinema distribution. With many new Netflix original films coming this month, including Night Teeth, we decided to list the 12 greatest Netflix original films to date.

1The Scotsman

The Irishman

Scorsese’s new picture, The Irishman, expands on the Leftist themes seen in his underappreciated Boxcar Bertha. In the film, Jimmy Hoffa’s International Brotherhood of Teamsters fights for worker’s rights, and the film’s main character, Frank Sheeran, is a member, the president of Local 236, and a hitman for disloyal union members. Although The Irishman depicts working-class struggle, it is tainted by its location in a mafia environment. With the assistance of the Bufalino Crime Family, headed by Russell Bufalino, Frank and Jimmy were mainly responsible for tainting unions with organized crime. The Irishman shines light on union corruption and how any Leftist organization may be destroyed in a capitalist society’s darkest depths. It illustrates the actual aspect of attempting to enact “radical” change in a culture that is overly set in its ways; The Irishman demonstrates how The Teamsters accepted capitalism, avarice, and a dangerous hierarchy that is contradictory to unions. The Irishman demonstrates how far Scorsese has progressed since The Departed – it’s a risky picture with an uncompromising aesthetic vision that few studios were willing to take a chance on. In some ways, The Irishman is a cross between Boxcar Bertha and Goodfellas. Marxism collides with the Mafia.

2Roma

Roma

After a succession of contemplative blockbusters like Gravity and Children of Men, Alfonso Cuarón’s most personal film, Roma, is a tribute to the ladies in his life. It’s a slice-of-life film set in Mexico City in the early 1970s against the backdrop of the Mexican Dirty War and the reign of Los Halcones (The Falcons), a right-wing paramilitary group trained by the CIA to suppress Guerrero guerrilla Marxist-Leninist and socialist groups, as well as Leftist student protesters, committing war crimes and genocide. The film grossed $3 million in the United States, making it the first foreign language film to do so since Ida. It also won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the Venice International Film Festival and was nominated for ten Academy Awards, making it the first film distributed by a streaming service to receive a Best Picture nomination. Yalitza Aparicio, who is nominated for Finest Actress in a Leading Role, delivers one of the best performances of the decade.

5 Bloods 3Da 3Da 3Da 3Da 3Da 3

Da 5 Bloods

Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods is one of his best films, which says a lot given his impressive career, which never fails to speak out against injustice. The film follows four Vietnam soldiers who return to the nation in order to recover and bury CIA government gold meant to pay the Lahu people to assist in the battle against the Vietcong, as well as bring their friend’s remains home. They must choose whether putting their lives on the line for a cause they care about this time around in the heart of darkness is worth it. Torn between wanting to honor their fallen fifth Blood, played brilliantly by the late Chadwick Boseman, by obtaining the gold and giving back to the Black community and turning back when they run into a violent gang presence and hidden minds, they must decide whether putting their lives on the line for a cause they care about is worth it. Da 5 Bloods explores the perils of imperialism, democratizing people abroad, and the horrifying treatment of American soldiers (and veterans), particularly Black ones, who are seen as expendable, with dizzying sequences, Lee’s signature dolly shot with the four adult Bloods dancing in a Vietnamese club brilliantly juxtaposed with a Marvin Gaye track, and an outstanding performance from Delroy Lindo. In contrast to Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, Lee utilized elder Bloods in flashbacks to Vietnam rather than CGI de-aging to show how hampered they were by combat and PTSD.

4Marriage Tales

Marriage Story

Given that the majority of marriages end in divorce, Marriage Story is probably the most realistic portrayal of marriage in the contemporary world (more than 50 percent ). It depicts the end of a marriage, complete with a slew of arguments, marital problems, borderline verbal abuse, adultery, and two individuals clinging to the last vestiges of love they have for one other. Marriage Story is a cautionary story about keeping one’s emotions within rather than pursuing a more difficult, unpleasant legal path in the process of divorce, sometimes at the expense of a child’s emotional development. Both Charlie and Nicole employ ruthless attorneys who, in the end, don’t know what’s best for their kid Henry. A savage fight follows, wreaking havoc on a family of artists who, in the end, want the best for their kid. Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role were among the six Academy Awards given to the picture.

5Mudbound

Mudbound

Mudbound is a complex story of prejudice and PTSD in the American midwest during the aftermath of World War II, directed by the renowned Dee Rees. There are several excellent performances in this film, but Mary J. Blige, a singer and actress, is an obvious standout. Following its debut at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, Mudbound was battled over by A24 and Annapurna Pictures for distribution rights, but Netflix eventually won it, demonstrating the streaming service’s might. During awards season, the picture received a slew of firsts. Mudbound was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Original Song, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography at the 90th Academy Awards (Rachel Morrison the first woman to ever be nominated in this category). Rees was also the first Black woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Mary J. Blige also made history by being the first person to be nominated for both an acting and an original song Oscar in the same year. Mudbound was named one of the top 100 movies of the decade by The A.V. Club in 2019.

6My name is Dolemite.

Dolemite is My Name

Dolemite Is My Name! is a biography of Rudy Ray Moore, a persistently optimistic rap musician and the persona behind Dolemite, a character in Moore’s famous Blaxploitation films from the 1970s. Murphy gives a famous performance reminiscent of his comedy from the 1980s and 1990s, with great emotional depth. Moore’s tone, tireless drive, and mannerisms are masterfully imitated by him. Keegan Michael Key, Craig Robinson, Mike Epps, Tituss Burgess, and Chris Rock are among the film’s impressive supporting ensemble. Aside from celebrating Black brilliance, maybe the most significant aspect of the film is that it exposes Moore’s timeless work to a new generation of moviegoers. The film has a 97 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Meyerwitz’s Stories

The Meyerwitz Stories

The Meyerowitz Stories is a considerably livelier Noah Baumbach picture than Marriage Story, thanks to a trio of great performances by Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller, and, in especially, Adam Sandler. It portrays adult children, unresolved childhood problems, and the façade of expectations meeting reality as it follows three generations of a family with a musical talent flowing through their veins. As a family gathers to celebrate their father’s creative accomplishments, one of his contemporaries has a bitter vendetta against him, and he refuses to even attend the party at the college where he used to teach. The Meyerwitz Stories, like other Baumbach films, depicts family dysfunction at its most uncomfortable, eccentric, and sometimes funny moments. Things come to a head as his kids fight for his love, and an odd group of people band together to heal past wounds. The film was nominated for the Palm d’Or, and Einstein, the film’s dog, received the Palm Dog prize at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

8Always Be My Possibly

Always Be My Maybe

Always Be My Maybe is a romantic comedy done properly, with honest, realistic ethics and pathos, believable interpersonal dynamics, and fascinating cross-cultural representations, especially gastronomy, set in the gorgeous San Francisco Bay Area, one of the world’s culinary capitals. It was the start of Randall Park’s career as a lead – a romantic lead, at that – rather than the supporting character actor he’d been for so long, and it included a funny appearance by Keanu Reeves, who portrays a douchier version of himself in the film. Ali Wong Park and Park met in the 1990s and worked together for years to produce their own version of When Harry Met Sally. Thanks to a fantastic screenplay and Netflix’s bet on their success, it became a reality. They had no intention of getting Reeves to agree to the cameo, but he was immediately on board since he is a huge admirer of Wong’s stand-up. Original music by Park and Dan the Automator, based on Park’s 90s Bay Area hip-hop duo “Ill Again,” is the frosting on the cake in this award-winning film.

9Okja

Okja

Bong Joon-ho and his films are adored by everyone. Okja is no different. The film offers us an odd hero to cheer for – a pig – in a strange, almost gonzo-esque story about the dangers of excessive capitalism and overproduction. Ahn Seo-hyun, Byun Hee-bong, Yoon Je-moon, Choi Woo-shik, Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, Steven Yeun, Lily Collins, Shirley Henderson, Daniel Henshall, Devon Bostick, Giancarlo Esposito, and Jake Gyllenhaal are among the outstanding cast members. Okja is a Mirando Corporation super pig that lives in South Korea with Mija and her grandpa in tranquility. When Okja is brought to Mirando for slaughter, an animal rights organization assists in exposing the company’s abuse of the animals and reunites Okja with Mija. At the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, the film earned a four-minute standing ovation and was nominated for the Palme d’Or.

10Personal Life

Private Life

If you, a family member, or a loved one has ever gone through the in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure to produce a child, Private Life will be all too familiar, yet profoundly moving. It may be a long and arduous procedure. It’s a quiet film about a couple that tries unsuccessfully to conceive via IVF, considers adoption, and then turns to egg donors to improve their chances of getting pregnant together. The egg donation possibility becomes a reality when a relative moves in. Bumps on the path, on the other hand, lead to even greater disappointment and marital despair. Although this film deals with serious subject matter – including a marriage that has been put to the test – it does so with grace and a refreshing comic perspective, thanks to Kathryn Hahn and Paul Giamatti’s pitch-perfect performances. Despite the fact that libidos are put to the test in lieu of procreation’s tunnel vision, the love this couple has for one other outweighs the film’s cynical undertones. It has a 94 percent Rotten Tomatoes approval rating and a staggering 83 out of 100 on Metacritic, indicating “Universal Acclaim.” It was nominated for Best Director, Best Screenplay Nominated, and Best Supporting Female at the Independent Spirit Awards, and it has a 94 percent Rotten Tomatoes approval rating.

11Bird Cage

Bird Box

Bird Box, based on Josh Malerman’s eponymous book, was a worldwide phenomenon upon its debut, written by Academy Award winner Eric Heisserer (Arrival). It’s a film about a weird suicide pandemic that’s linked to one of the human race’s most valuable gifts: sight. In the end, the film is a survival story about a woman and her two children attempting to flee a post-apocalyptic world to safety. Apart from Sandra Bullock’s acting, one of the finest parts of the picture is Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ usually somber music, which adds to the film’s ominous tone. In July 2020, Netflix announced that the film had 89 million views in the first four weeks of its release, second only to Extraction for one of their original films.

12Extraction

Extraction

Extraction, directed by Joe Russo, was seen by 99 million Netflix subscribers in its first four weeks. This no-holds-barred thriller follows a former SASR operator turned black market mercenary who is sent on the most dangerous mission of his career: rescuing the abducted son of a notorious international crime lord. This time, the mercenary’s job is particularly personal for him since he lost his own kid to cancer while serving in Afghanistan, and he doesn’t want to lose another child on his watch and have it on his conscience, therefore he’ll go to any length to accomplish it. The 12-minute, one-shot chase scene in which director Sam Hargrave straps himself to a car as he follows Chris Hemsworth in a car ahead, unstraps himself during a car’s J-turn, almost getting hit in the process, and gets into his car, all while making the camera seamle, is perhaps the most impressive aspect of the film, along with the many exciting stunts. It’s an incredible technological achievement. Scenes like these are what made Extraction such a must-see Netflix film.
