Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford has criticised the government’s decision to cut Universal Credit. The 20-year-old, who was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Salford on Monday, said that it was “not a good decision” and that he is “disappointed”.

Marcus Rashford, a Manchester United player, said it was “bittersweet” to get an honorary degree for fighting child poverty the day after Universal Credit was reduced.

The England star used his Old Trafford address on Thursday to emphasize how the Government’s withdrawal of the £20 boost meant that’millions of families throughout the UK lost a lifeline.’

During the COVID-19 epidemic, Universal Credit was raised to help low-income individuals, but it was cut on Wednesday.

At the age of 23, Rashford became the University of Manchester’s youngest honorary doctorate winner, saying: ‘I’m here to get my honorary doctorate for my efforts on child poverty.’

‘Millions of families throughout the UK lost a lifeline and a way of keeping afloat yesterday, potentially bringing child poverty to one in every three children. As a result, it is a bittersweet day.

‘It’s past time for elected officials to visit villages like mine.’

‘It’s past time kids saw firsthand the real meaning of hardship.’ Covid-19 is no longer an acceptable explanation.’

The University of Manchester announced Rashford will receive the award in July of last year, but the event was postponed because to the epidemic.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who also has an honorary degree from the institution, was there to see Rashford accept the accolade from vice-chancellor Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell.

“Marcus is an outstanding young man who continues to show a sense of community and compassion that goes far beyond his years,” Dame Nancy remarked while presenting Rashford with his degree.

‘At our university, social responsibility is a fundamental value, and we are delighted to share these ideals with Marcus.’

‘It’s a true privilege to finally be able to present him with this well-deserved award on behalf of our university.’

‘His continuing charitable efforts and high-profile initiatives not only benefit millions of people throughout the nation, but they also inspire many more to strive to make a difference.’ ‘May it continue for a long time.’

Last year, Rashford ran a high-profile campaign to convince the government to give free meals to disadvantaged children in England during the coronavirus epidemic, compelling Prime Minister Boris Johnson to reverse his position.

He has supported numerous child food poverty projects and was the youngest individual to reach the top of the Sunday Times Giving List by collecting £20 million in contributions from supermarkets for organizations working to combat the problem.
