Paul died in explosive scenes as the barn where he was due to be married caught fire (Picture: ITV)

Paul Ashdale (Rhys Dinsdale) met his end in Emmerdale tonight after being injured in a shocking explosion.

The rapist, about to marry Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley), is determined to keep the fact that he molested Vinny’s (Bradley Johnson) son a secret.

However, when super sleuth Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele) discovers the truth, his plans are thwarted and he resorts to violence by brutally attacking her in the wedding barn.

Jimmy King (Nick Miles) meanwhile loses control of his car and crashes into the same barn, leaving Paul in a bad way.

Liv tried to save Paul at all costs, but when the fire broke out, she was forced to leave him and go away. The tragedy quickly extinguished when a massive explosion sent everything up in smoke.

Paul succumbed to his injuries in hospital, Mandy was devastated.

Mandy was devastated when Paul died (Picture: ITV).

To be honest, I’m delighted, said actor Rhys Dinsdale about the death of his alter ego. The past month has been very difficult, giving lots of interviews to the press, television and radio and trying not to spill any beans. Yuck!

Paul quickly became one of the most hated TV villains in the country, no doubt thanks to the writers’ efforts to characterize him, but also thanks to actor Rees, who delivered nothing short of an award-winning performance.

I loved it [playing Paul], the actor said. Especially since we were trying to make him a complete character and not make him look like a villain from the outside. The secret was to let his slip slowly bleed out. I think it worked.

I thought it would be hard to find our way out of Corrie, where I drowned in Lake Windermere….. but maybe we made it! I’d say it’s a lot better than going by taxi.

Paul didn’t make it (Photo: ITV).

This time it was filmed back-to-back, and it was the day I died in the hospital. It was very moving… and I got to hear some beautiful things that will stay with me forever. What a great big family – the Emmerdale team!

Reece described the recording of the explosion as monotonous because it had to be done according to Covid’s instructions.

It was annoying, he said. Both in terms of attention to detail and safety, and in terms of continuous compliance with Covid rules. But it was also fun. More than just an ordinary day at the office!

Before getting the role of Paul, Rhys worked as a director on the ITV soap, and he said he would continue to do so now that Paul has left.

I was directing Emmerdale when I was suddenly asked to play Paul, he said. I am happy to announce that I will be directing the show again in a few weeks. I’m the cat that took the cream!

He added: Bradley and Lisa made me feel welcome and that has never changed. We worked hard and laughed a lot. I will continue to work with them, but in a different capacity. Damn it, I’m gonna get the whip!

Emmerdale is on Friday the 2nd. April, 7pm on ITV.
