The Mavericks are excited about life after Luka Doncic, and are hoping to keep him in Dallas for a long time. The Mavericks recently signed the third pick in the 2018 NBA Draft to a four-year, $80 million extension. Luka Doncic, the Mavericks’ point guard/power forward, is a special player. He has led the Mavericks to the playoffs each of the last two seasons. In 2017-2018, he averaged 17 points, six assists, and five rebounds per game. Doncic is also a team leader. Last season, Doncic was named the Western Conference Player of the Month for February. He averaged 21 points, seven rebounds, and five assists per game.

The Mavericks have agreed to a four-year, $80 million extension with Luka Doncic that will keep him in Dallas through the 2022-2023 season. The deal, which is expected to be finalized later today, will make him the fourth-highest paid player in the NBA. The Mavs are also expected to keep Deandre Jordan (three years, $71.4 million) and Kristaps Porzingis (four years, $158 million) on the books.. The Dallas Mavericks met with star guard Luka Doncic at a Slovenian hotel early Tuesday morning to formally sign a five-year, $207 million contract deal. They were on stage hours later to announce it, with Doncic stating that he “never had a question” about signing it.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Thank you, Dallas, for making this opportunity available to me “he said “I’m still at a loss for words since this is something I never expected to happen. I had only dreamed of playing in the NBA, but now I have the opportunity to sign a five-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks, which I never doubted. This is something I’ve always wanted to sign.”

Bill Duffy and Quique Villalobos, Doncic’s representatives, were there, as were Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, general manager Nico Harrison, and coach Jason Kidd. While Doncic grinned, Cuban began his comments with a sentence in Slovenian.

“Today is a significant day,” Cuban remarked. “We had a feeling Luka would be excellent when we selected him in 2018.” But we didn’t expect him to be this amazing. That is the result of a lot of effort on his side. He didn’t simply show up; he dedicated his whole life to it.

“To be able to say he signed an extension with the Dallas Mavericks, and we want him to have the same kind of Hall of Fame career, if not more, as Dirk [Nowitzki], who is sitting here in the first row,” he said.

The 22-year-old guard has quickly risen to the top of the league, establishing himself as one of the league’s most prominent figures. Because he’s been selected to the All-NBA first team twice, he’s eligible for a designated maximum contract, making his contract the biggest rookie extension in history.

Doncic addressed questions in Slovene, English, and Spanish at a 30-minute press conference. Doncic’s responses were interpreted by an interpreter. Doncic chuckled when asked what he would start spending his money on by a Slovenian journalist.

“It’s a big amount, but I’m not thinking about it yet,” Doncic said via an interpreter. “So far, I haven’t purchased anything good from here. However, I need to think about it further before I start spending.”

A Mavs delegation went to Ljubljana, Slovenia, to deliver the contract offer while waiting for the end of the Olympics, when Doncic led his nation to a bronze medal game.

The Mavs delivering the deal in person was “simply to reinforce to Luka how important he is to us and how this is only the beginning,” Cuban stated. “We want him to know that we are here for him, whether in Slovenia, Dallas, or anyplace else on the planet. Not just getting to know him, but also learning what’s essential to him, is a crucial part of this process. He has a unique perspective on things. We were able to take that initial step by coming here, going around the city with him, and meeting the people of Ljubljana.”

In a semifinal defeat to France in Tokyo, Doncic was probably the most impressive player of the competition, scoring 48 points in his Olympic debut and establishing an Olympic record with 18 assists.

“It means a great deal to me. It’s fantastic, “The Mavs are going to Doncic’s hometown, he remarked via an interpreter. “It speaks a lot about you people that you’ve come all the way to Ljubljana. You’re wonderful individuals, and I’m really glad this is happening.”

Doncic began his career at Real Madrid, where he was named the youngest EuroLeague MVP in 2017-18. The Atlanta Hawks selected him third overall in the 2018 draft, but he was quickly sold to Dallas in exchange for Trae Young and a future first-round selection.

“The first time I heard about [Doncic] was watching [Real Madrid] play the Thunder in a preseason game,” Cuban remarked. “Obviously, there was a lot of discussion about him, and I believe he scored on Russell Westbrook, or defended Russell, or something along those lines, and it drew attention to him. From then, I followed him and we spoke about him a lot.”

Despite the Mavericks’ internal upheaval earlier this summer, when veteran GM Donnie Nelson resigned and coach Rick Carlisle left for the Indiana Pacers, Doncic’s decision to sign the contract was never in question.

“First and foremost, living in Dallas seems like a second home to me. It seems like home there, and I’m in good spirits “he said “The organization’s employees are wonderful individuals. I’m simply at ease there. I’m at a loss for words.”
