Jordan Nixon (No. 5) received a foul from her teammates after scoring the decisive stop to send Texas A&M to the round of 16 … Carmen Mandato/Getty Images.
Jordan Nixon saved Texas A&M from elimination in the tournament as the highest seeded team to date by deciding the game in overtime and giving the Aggies an 84-82 victory over Iowa State.
Seventh-ranked Iowa State led for most of the game and ended the third quarter with a nine-point lead. But the second-seeded Aggies, who had advanced to the first round through a win over 15th-seeded Troy, did not give in without a fight.
Nixon’s jumper combined with a layup from Ciera Johnson with a minute left to play brought the Aggies to within one point of the Cyclones. Ashley Jones, who finished with 32 points and 18 rebounds for Iowa State, responded with a turnaround jumper.
Nixon sent the game to overtime with a layup and opened the extra period with a 3-pointer that gave the Aggies their first lead of the game. The teams played volleyball to the end and were tied with one second to go when Nixon broke loose and called his save at the buzzer. She finished with 35 points.
The Alamodome resounded with the loudest cheers of the tournament and the Aggies breathed a sigh of relief. Texas A&M will participate in the Sweet 16 for the third consecutive season.
In an interview after the game, Nixon dedicated his performance to his high school coach, Dave Edwards, who died on the 24th. Mars 2020 died after a coronavirus infection.
Today was for him, she said.
She added: We weren’t going to go home tonight, and I’m glad we’re still dancing.

Aari McDonald, right, scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Arizona against Brigham Young University…. Michael Thomas/Associated Press…
No. 3 Arizona won 52-46 after a thrilling battle with No. 1 Arizona. 11 Brigham Young University. Neither team has ever trailed by more than 6 points in their encounters. This is the second time the Wildcats have reached the Round of 16 and the first time since coach Adia Barnes arrived at Arizona in 1998.
All or nothing, do or die, Arizona senior Aari McDonald said in a television interview after the game. She finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. I didn’t want to go home at all, so I had to give in and leave everything on the set.
McDonald hit his first three-pointer midway through the fourth quarter. After a missed shot by Brigham Young, the Wildcats made a reverse layup.
We know the defense is going to lead our offense, and I’m the catalyst, McDonald said. In the second half I was proud of my defense and we got the job done.
Trinity Baptiste went down in the final minute after grabbing 11 rebounds and returning a potentially life-saving shot after one of McDonald’s normally sharp misses from the guard. McDonald then made a layup that sealed the game.
After the Wildcats converted a number of free throws, the Cougars had one last chance – a chance McDonald generated with a steal with nine seconds left before making another layup and heading for his first Sweet 16.

Indiana celebrates its Belmont Road. linked to credit Ronald Cortez/Associated Press
Fourth-seeded Indiana earned its first Sweet 16 spot with a 70-48 victory over 12th-seeded Belmont, leaving the Bruins out of the running. For coach Teri Morin, this is her first trip to the round of 16.
Four of the five starters scored at least 10 points for the Hoosiers. Fifth-year senior Alexei Gulbe, 6-foot-6, scored nine points and grabbed 15 rebounds.
A lot of what she does doesn’t show up in the stats, said Grace Berger, who scored 17 points in the game and has the most triple doubles in Division I this season. The fact that she grabbed 15 rebounds is huge, but it’s nothing she doesn’t do every game for us.
Belmont was able to stay within reach in the first half, but Indiana pulled away and the Bruins struggled in the second half. While the Hoosiers hit 14 free throws, Belmont was only able to capitalize on one, preventing the Bruins from staying competitive.
We’re very excited – to say the least, Berger continued. But we also know that we’re not done yet.

After a disastrous first half, No. 2 seeded Louisville was able to change its starting rotation and beat No. 7 seeded Northwestern 62-53 to secure a spot in the Sweet 16. The Cardinals outscored the Wildcats 55-28 in the second half.
Louisville scored less than 20 points in the first half, followed by 18 points. But the Cardinals scored 20 points in the third quarter and held the Wildcats to eight points.
Her 18-point comeback is the third-best in the women’s tournament.
It shows us that we’re never out of the game, said Dana Evans, the Cardinals’ star goalie.
Evans got off to a slow start, but finished with 14 points and was the offensive catalyst in the comeback. Kianna Smith added 16 points and Olivia Cochran had 13 points and 15 rebounds.
The win was reminiscent of the Cardinals’ first-round victory over Marist, where they trailed 21-12 in the second quarter and fought back for a decisive 74-43 win.
It’s the second game in a row, Cardinals coach Jeff Walz said. So the first thing I’m going to do is change my pre-race speech.
A 17-0 run in the second half gave the Cardinals the lead Wednesday despite leading by less than 10 minutes. The Cardinals shot just 36 percent.
Jordan Hamilton led Northwestern with 17 points.

Missouri State won that battle of the mid-majors by No. 13 to defeat Wright State, which had just ended the tournament with a victory over No. 1-ranked Wright State. 4 Arkansas.
Elle Raffridge, a 6-foot-6 senior guard, scored a career-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. Jasmine Franklin helped the Lady Bears control the glass with her 11 rebounds, surpassing her season average of 10 rebounds per game, while Wright State struggled to grab the rebounds that got them into the first round. Missouri State led the Raiders by 16 points at the end of the game, 64-39.
I mean, the shooters shot, Ruffridge said after the game. I was trapped, in the zone. I will do whatever it takes to win.
The fifth-seeded Lady Bears advance to the Round of 16 for the second consecutive season, an accomplishment for Missouri State coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton in her first appearance as head coach in the postseason. Agugua-Hamilton is the first African-American female head coach in the state of Missouri.
I don’t think they get the respect they deserve, Agugua-Hamilton said of his team after the game. You haven’t seen a recap of our play in the first round, and you haven’t seen anything from us before this game. The N.C.A.A. tweeted a photo of Wright State. We are treated with great disrespect, but that only fuels our fire. We say: Scratch now, shine later – every day.

Oregon fought its way to its fourth Sweet 16 appearance in program history – in some cases, literally.
Oregon’s 57-50 victory over No. 3 Georgia was very physical, with players jumping, ducking and knocking each other down in a duel for control. The Ducks’ big advantage allowed them to effectively run the ball through Georgia, forcing the Bulldogs to play closer to the ground and in some cases overplay the ball.
The game was tied at halftime, but the No. 6 seeded Ducks took advantage of those mistakes and turnovers and took a seven point lead into the third quarter. Taylor Mikesell scored on a breakaway layup, followed by Nyara Saballi making a jumper in the paint with just over three minutes to play.
Oregon made 5 of 12 shots from beyond the arc, while Georgia made just 1 of 13 three-pointers. Sedona Prince was the leading scorer for the Ducks with 22 points. Georgia’s main sponsor, Jenna Staiti, was 18 years old.
But Georgia came back in the fourth period and took a one-point lead on a layup by defenseman Mikayla Combs with four minutes to go. From that point on, the teams traded baskets until Oregon scored on a layup and a jumper by Saballi to take a six-point lead.
Eventually, the Bulldogs gave up and Mikesell’s series of free throws sealed the victory.
After the game, the Ducks gathered on the field to celebrate, while invited friends and family could be seen in the background.

Vera Masonia had a near-perfect game against Maryland in the round of 16…. Ronald Cortez/Associated Press…
Maryland showed its offensive muscle in a dominant win over No. 1. 7 Alabama, by defeating the Crimson Tide 100-64. The Terrapins matched their 2020-21 season scoring average of 91 points nearly five minutes into the fourth quarter. It was the seventh game in which Maryland has scored at least 100 points this season.
Angel Reese, a freshman who was recruited to Maryland as the No. 2 player in the country and did not play in his fourth game because of a foot injury, shot 8-for-12 for 19 points in a typically efficient performance. Vera Masonius, who came off the bench for Maryland, scored 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
Alabama senior Jasmine Walker, the W.N.B.A.’s leading scorer, led the game with 23 points, but it wasn’t enough to stop Maryland’s offense.
Maryland’s victory was a turnaround two days after the men’s team lost to Alabama in the second round of the men’s tournament, a game in which the Crimson Tide scored 96 points.

Wright State plays with confidence in hunt for second win. linked to credit Steven Spillman/Associated Press…
When the Wright State Raiders lost No. 1 on Monday. 4 Arkansas, they surprised many. In the end, it was the first time since 2012 that the No. 13 seed won a game in the N.C.A.A. women’s tournament. But the 66-62 victory was no surprise to them.
We just played our game – took notes, broke some clips, Angel Baker told reporters after she scored 26 points to lead the Raiders to their first win in the N.C.A.A. tournament. We can beat anyone.
Baker was undoubtedly the star of the team, and his efficiency, scoring speed and impressive field vision made him immediately obvious to any observer.
But the Raiders’ performance is the bottom line. They are one of the best rebounding teams in the country, so even without many shots, they are able to convert 42.5 percent of their misses – the fifth best percentage in the country.
That emphasis is placed by fifth-year head coach Katrina Merriweather, who has won the Horizon League three times. Wright State is their first head coaching position.
We’re a team that drives, rebounds and defends, Merriweather said. I don’t think we can pretend to be anything else. I don’t think you can try to be something else and be good at it. So that should have been our game plan.
The Raiders face another defensive team in the No. 5 seeded Missouri Bears, who average over 40 rebounds per game.
Sometimes we get a little distracted by how good we feel, Merriweather said. But we’re just talking about living up to our potential. If we do that and stick to our plan, we have a chance to compete with anyone.

Lewis’ Jordan is one of the reasons Alabama seems to be able to compete with the best teams. Carmen Mandato/Getty Images.
Alabama has yet to win, but the seventh-ranked team has already made history by winning its first tournament title since 1999.
The Crimson Tide is currently playing their best basketball of the season, led by a trio of seniors who share the ball well and are used to playing against strong teams – even if they usually couldn’t win. Alabama is 0-8 against programs from the Associated Press Top 25 and is looking for its first win against an elite team Wednesday against No. 2 seeded Maryland.
If you’re going to do the job, you have to be confident enough to come in here and know you can do it, Jordan Lewis said. She has started every game for the Crimson Tide since joining the program in 2016.
I think if a lot of people doubt you or don’t trust you, you have to have that trust in your team and in your coaches, she added. We’ve been supporting each other all year.
Lewis, a 5-foot-7 guard, had an outstanding game in North Carolina’s loss against Alabama on Monday, posting a near triple-double with 32 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Lewis and seniors Aria Copeland and Jasmine Walker each have 10 points. Walker is one of the top three shooters in Division I, shooting 40 percent of her shots.
However, they will need to play their best game of the season to have a chance against Maryland, which has the highest offensive production in the country. The Terrapins are not untouchable: Since 2010, they have lost five times in the second round of the tournament, and in four of those games they were the highest seed.
And the tide is now turning. I think it takes a lot of weight off our shoulders, Lewis said. It is so nice to play with your teammates and not have that weight on your shoulders.

Destinee Wells led Belmont to its first win in the N.C.A.A. tournament. ….. Chuck Burton/Associated Press.
It’s striking how quickly Iowa’s Caitlin Clark and Connecticut’s Paige Buchers have become offensive monsters. The rookies lead their teams and are both among the best in Division I in points and assists. When they meet in the Sweet 16, it promises to be one of the brightest matches of the tournament.
But there are plenty of other rookies who want to contribute in the postseason. Some have already done so, but with slightly less spectacular figures.
Belmont guard Destinee Wells recorded her 12th shutout of her career. Team with 25 points, seven assists and three steals to earn its first N.C.A.A. Tournament victory over Gonzaga. Wells, who is 5-foot-8, even had a block, a testament to the determination and energy she showed during the race. Plus, he plays better in good conditions: The highlight of Wells’ career was the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, where she scored 32 points to lead her team to victory and her fifth consecutive appearance in the N.C.A.A. Tournament.
We just played against a really good defensive team, and the fact that they did that against these guys gave us a chance to show how good they are, Belmont coach Bart Brooks said after the game. I don’t think anyone who has seen us play will walk away without a lot of respect for Destiny Wells.
Young talent is not only nurtured by outsiders. Louisville’s two freshmen, Haley Van Leet and Olivia Cochran, combine for 21 points per game and are the primary backups to All-American Dana Evans. Cochran averaged nearly 13 rebounds per game, and in his first game of the tournament, Van Lith led the way with 17 points.
We talked to them, and only two of our players went to the N.C.A.A. tournament for Louisville, Van Liet said. So it’s a very young team. And I wouldn’t say we were nervous or anxious, but there was just a general excitement.
Stanford’s Cameron Brink is another newcomer to the lead group. The 6-foot-8 forward has a first-class pedigree: She shares a coach with Megan Rapinoe, and Dell and Sonia Curry – the parents of Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry – are her sponsors. None of this has anything to do with the process, of course. She blocked nearly 15 percent of her shots there and is as reliable as she is scoring under the basket – she even hit a three-pointer in her second game of the tournament, her 10th of the season.
