Gary Pallister believes Manchester United are serious contenders for the Premier League title and believes they have an equal chance of going all the way.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are top of the Premier League ahead of this weekend’s clash with Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s team are three points clear of the defending champion with a 1-0 win over Burnley on Tuesday night and will be hoping to take a six-point lead with a win at Anfield on Sunday.

Former central defender Pallister believes the turnaround at United is the reason Solskjaer was appointed manager and he now believes the team can go all the way.

It was a great feeling to be on top of the table after Christmas, Pallister told Sky Sports.

It’s been a long road to get there, and that justifies Ole and the way he talked about his team – that they weren’t that far off the mark. The jump to the top of the table justifies the work he has done.

I’d like to say they can win the title and yes, I think they can. If I were a bookie, I’d probably say it’s a chance to even the score.

They play incredible football. The top three with [Bruno] Fernandez and [Paul] Pogba behind them, if they hit the tape every week or most of the time, I think they can challenge.

We’ve had our ups and downs with this Manchester United team. Sometimes they show weakness, and that’s what Ole is trying to correct.

We made a few missteps when Ole came on, but just after the first international break, the football we played was fantastic. Then we were careless at the start of the game and conceded goals.

If they can maintain this level, it could be a challenge, but it’s a matter of finding it more often.

Pallister believes Liverpool and Manchester City are United’s biggest threats, but he believes his former side can send a real message with three points this weekend.

Get inspired. It has been a long road, he added.

A club like Manchester United should be there most seasons and what we have seen since Sir Alex left is not good.

I don’t think we’ve played particularly exciting football or the kind of football you expect from Manchester United, but I think it’s something Ole has tried to bring forward since he came to the club and we’re just reaping the rewards.

The whole team is confident. I’m not saying they’re going to win the title. I think Liverpool and Manchester City will still have their say in the title race, but it is such an important game coming up on Sunday.

If you can beat Liverpool on their home turf, that’s a real message.
