WandaVision’s Monica Rambo (Teyona Parris) will rise higher, further and faster with her growing superpowers in Captain Marvel 2 against Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), but the relationship may not be as close as the one between Carol and Maria Rambo (Lashana Lynch). Then Monica comes back to life during the Avengers events: She eventually learns that Mariah – the patroness and founder of S.W.O.R.D., where Monica follows in her mother’s footsteps – died of cancer in 2020, two years after Monica disappeared for five years at the hands of Thanos (Josh Brolin), who wiped out half of all life in the universe.
While Monica, astrophysicist Dr. Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) and an FBI agent (Jimmy Woo) discuss the insane power wielded by the sad Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) inside the Westview Anomaly nicknamed Hex, Monica remains coldly silent about the endless Captain Marvel working on the Rock and his fight with Thanos in Endgame as she says no one talks about her.
Whatever happened between 11-year-old Monica (Akira Akbar) and Carol, affectionately called Aunt Carol, decades earlier in 1995, the answer may not come until the sequel, which will hit cinemas in 2022.
As you know, it has been announced that I will be part of the cast of Captain Marvel 2 with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and Kamala Khan’s character, Parris told ET Canada. I think we’re going to explore that relationship and what happens to those two.
Parris had already hinted at a superhero trio in Captain Marvel 2, in which Monica could take on the call sign Photon, named after her mother, but Monica’s seemingly fractured relationship with Carol could be an unresolved aftermath of her mother’s death.
Not only did [Monica’s mother] die, but Monica was not there to help her mother transition. And it’s a very hard pill to swallow, Parris told TVLine. The guilt, the shame, and all the other grief she’s trying to deal with by going back to work on a project she wouldn’t normally even do – there are parallels between Monica’s grief and trauma and the tragedy she’s going through and what Wanda is going through. Monica connected with Wanda on that level.
Asked about the strained relationship between Monica and Carol, Parris said: We have a lot of space and time to play with the relationship between Carol and Monica [in Captain Marvel 2]. When asked if WandaVision would reveal any more information about the breakup before the movie began, Parris replied that there was still a lot to tell in the last three episodes of the series.
Nia DaCosta Captain Marvel 2 comes out on the 11th. November 2022 in cinemas.
