Ed Woodward has held this position since 2013.

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is stepping down at the end of 2021.

The announcement was made before Manchester United withdrew from the proposed European Super League (ESL), along with five other Premier League rivals.

The proposal for a separate league was widely condemned.

Woodward, 49, joined United in 2005 and has held the position since 2012.

He was due to leave at the end of the year, but the decision to announce his departure was postponed to a later date.

I am very proud to have worked for United and it has been an honour to work for the biggest football club in the world for the past 16 years, Woodward said.

The club is well positioned for the future and will be hard to leave at the end of the year.

Following the announcement of the ESL plans on Sunday, Woodward stepped down as a member of UEFA’s professional football strategy board.

Woodward made a significant contribution to the discussion of the revamped Champions League on Friday.

UEFA had hoped the new 36-team Champions League, agreed on Monday, would not break with the Super League, but the controversial competition was announced on Sunday.

UEFA president Alexander Seferin criticised Woodward and said United were happy with the reforms during his last appearance on Thursday night.

Seferin added that Woodward only wanted to discuss financial integrity, but had apparently already signed on for something else.

Joel Glaser, co-chairman of Manchester United, will become vice-chairman of the Super League.

Sports was told that the arrangement between Woodward and the Glazer family owners was amicable and that there was no fallout.

The announcement was made due to the prospect of leaks.

On behalf of everyone at United, I want to express our sincere gratitude for his tireless work and dedication, Joel Glaser said.

His contribution to the club has been immense and he will always be welcome at Old Trafford as a member of the Manchester United family.

The move would end Woodward’s longstanding relationship with the Glazer family.

Woodward played a key role in completing the controversial acquisition in 2005.

However, since replacing David Gill as manager in 2013, he has faced criticism for the club’s inability to compete for the Premier League title and for a sometimes chaotic transfer policy.

Woodward made the decision to sack David Moyes less than a year after his six-year contract expired to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson.

Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho were also sacked for failing to live up to expectations.

Current coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed in December 2018 and Woodward has stayed away from the Norwegian despite inconsistent form.

I am particularly pleased with the progress the players have made over the past two years under the able leadership of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching staff, Woodward added.

I am confident that with the changes we have made on the field and within the coaching and coaching team over the last few years, this great club will soon be able to win trophies again. He deserved it.

Woodward’s home in Cheshire was attacked by a group who called for him to die in January 2020, although Woodward was not at home at the time.
