Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming has been a big hit at the box office this year, but there’s a chance the studio might not be done with their webslinger’s New York-based superhero friends just yet. There’s a possibility that Sony and Marvel will continue the Spider-Man: Homecoming franchise by creating a spin-off featuring the Sinister Six, which is a group of supervillain characters that was featured in the blockbuster film.

After several false starts, Marvel Studios is finally moving forward with its proposed Sinister Six spin-off movie, and is now aiming to begin principal photography this summer. It will reportedly be the first of four spinoffs that will continue to pepper the shared Marvel Cinematic Universe, which began in 2008 with the first Iron Man film.

The Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel has had a very tumultuous journey to the big screen. The movie was originally announced for 2018, then delayed to a 2019 release date, then delayed again to a 2020 release date, and now it has been pushed back yet again to a 2021 release date. The movie is currently shooting, but not until it is ready.. Before Sony Pictures launched the shared universe of Marvel characters – which features Venom (Tom Hardy), living vampire Morbius (Jared Leto) and future Kraven (newcomer Aaron Taylor-Johnson) – Sony planned a standalone Sinister Six film that would be lifted from 2014’s Amazing Spider-Man 2. But when a deal was struck with Disney and Marvel Studios to reboot Spider-Man and include him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War, it marked a break in the many spin-offs that would follow Amazing Spider-Man 2.

As Sony gets ready to release Venom: Let There Be Carnage in September and Morbius in January, Spider-Man Studios has Kraven the Hunter, directed by JC Chandor, scheduled for 2023. With this character being one of the founding members of the team in Marvel Comics, does Craven mean Sony is creating his Sinister Six?

It’s difficult because I think we have to be in the dark on these projects, Sanford Panich, president of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, told Variety. They’re not done until they’re done. Craven is a good example because we took our time. We could have done this three years ago. Now, it’s just that the script is fantastic, JC was the right choice, and we found a movie star because it was just kismet, and we saw another movie [Bullet Train] and realized that [Taylor-Johnson] could be the perfect casting.

When Panich is asked about the Sinister Six, he replies with a grin: Wouldn’t that be cool?

Panich’s comment comes from reports that a version of the Sinister Six will appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Peter Parker (Tom Holland) takes on half a dozen villains from the unmasked Marvel multiverse. According to this report, the villains that can’t come back include Green Goblin Spider-Man (Willem Dafoe), Spider-Man 2’s Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Electro (Jamie Foxx).

Sony chose Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods, Bad Times at El Royale) to write and direct Sinister Six when the 2016 version of the film was one of several spin-offs that used The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as a starting point. The film’s credits hint at a cast that could include Electro, Doc Ock, Harry Osborne’s Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan), Mysterio, Reno and the Vulture.

Goddard later revealed that he envisioned Sinister Six as a summer yearbook, describing his super-villains ensemble as one where you don’t have to worry about continuity.

It was simple: We take Peter, send him on an adventure and bring him back to his life. I intentionally wanted to make a film that didn’t have to worry about mythology and continuity, Goddard told io9 in 2017. It was important to me to make a film that could stand on its own. The good news is that, you know, [laughs], it fits very well into any plan you can think of. We’ll have to give it a few years, I guess.

In late 2018, Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal told Vanity Fair that she was waiting until Drew Goddard was ready to direct Sinister Six, and that she would do everything with Drew Goddard. I’m just waiting for him to say he wants it.

Sony’s upcoming releases are Venom: Let There Be Carnage (September 24), Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home (December 17), Morbius (January 28, 2022) and Craven Hunter (January 13, 2023).
