Handa has won many national journalism awards, including two top accolades from the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) and a first-place award from the National Association of Black Journalists. Robert also received a number of Emmys, including one for outstanding investigative reporting and another from the Associated Press for best documentary. In 2010, he was inducted on the AAJA’s Pioneers in Journalism Honor Roll.

The Associated Press Television and Radio Association recognized Handa “Reporter of the Year” in 2016. He also won an Emmy for “Best Coverage of an Ongoing Story” for a series on the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center’s postponed $300 million expansion.
He has received exceptional alumni honors from Sunnyvale High School, De Anza College, and SJSU. Before returning to NBC Bay Area, Robert spent 16 years at KTVU as the station’s South Bay Reporter. Handa formerly worked as a reporter and fill-in anchor for KPIX in San Francisco, as well as a reporter and documentary producer for KQED-TV.
