The partnership provides nationally recognized neurosurgical services to the Central Coast population

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Tenet Health Central Coast is proud to announce a unique new partnership with the University of California, San Francisco and UCSF Health that will provide access to a nationally recognized network of neurology and spine services here on the Central Coast. The combination of UCSF’s expertise and advanced technology, including real-time consultation with neurosurgeons and experts during surgery, has created a new level of care for the Central Coast population.

This neurosurgical partnership with UCSF Health strengthens Tenet Health Central Coast’s ability to provide 24-hour state-of-the-art triage and care to any patient in San Luis Obispo County with acute or non-emergency brain, spinal or peripheral nerve disorders.

Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center neurosurgeons now have 24/7 access to UCSF Health neurosurgeons to discuss any Sierra Vista patient who may benefit from more complex treatment at UCSF. The continuity of care between the two organizations allows patients to stay in touch with their surgeons and specialists, regardless of the facility they need. Sierra Vista physicians and UCSF Health will work together to improve patient care by providing immediate expertise for emergency, urgent and semi-urgent neurosurgical consultations and transfers.

Two important aspects make this relationship unique in the region:

  • Direct, remote access to physicians at UCSF Health, allowing real-time consultation with neurosurgeons and experts, even during surgery;
  • A seamless service between the two organisations for the clinical journey of patients, ensuring that they are connected to surgeons and specialists regardless of the facility they require.

Our neurological services in Sierra Vista also include an advanced stroke program with a local interventional neurology team that responds to emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. By having direct access to physicians from the UCSF Department of Neurosurgery, which is recognized as one of the best in the country, we are providing our community with world-class care and experience, said Dr. Philip Kissel, director of neurosurgery at Sierra Vista and clinical professor at the UCSF Department of Neurosurgery. This relationship goes far beyond simply accessing UCSF’s expertise. We are committed to introducing new programs and services at the local level to directly support our community and its needs. I believe this merger will have a significant positive effect on our Central Coast community.

The UCSF Department of Neurological Surgery is proud to partner with Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for complex neurosurgical cases, including pediatrics, in Central California, said Mitchell Berger, MD, professor of neurological surgery at UCSF and director of the Brain Tumor Center.

We want to make sure our communities know we have a strong, high-quality neurology program next door through our partnership with UCSF Health. If patients do not have to be transferred or relocated for surgery, we believe their chances of recovery are greater, said Mark Lisa, CEO of Tenet Health Central Coast. We look forward to working with UCSF to achieve national excellence at the community level.
