Atascadero
The AHS football team opened their season Friday night with an away game against the Arroyo Grande Eagles. In the past, this would have been considered a league game, but Atascadero is playing in the Ocean League this season, making it a regular season game against a familiar opponent.
The Atascadero Greyhounds traveled to Arroyo Grande after a COVID complication forced the postponement of the opening game against Pioneer Valley. The Greyhounds fought until the end, scoring twice in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to recover and lost the game 33-21.
The Atascadero cross country team returned to action on Friday with a home game against an always strong San Luis Obispo High School team. The Greyhounds ran hard but lost to the Tigers and again had to do without some of their top runners.
Faith Rocha again led the women’s team, finishing first among all Greyhounds with a time of 15:09.86. Anna Archibald was the next woman to cross the finish line in tenth place with a time of 16:23.64, followed by Quinn Dubrule in twelfth place (16:41.67), Amelie Lovo in fourteenth place (17:01.14) and Bella Otter in fifteenth place (17:15.83).
On the boys side, the Greyhounds finished in the top 10 with two other runners. Kyle Shatwell finished eighth with a time of 13:27.45, followed by Dane Hardy in tenth with a time of 13:52.14. Atascadero’s last three boys, Carl Walrod, Kyle Sanchez, and Nahan Cooks, finished 12th through 14th consecutively.
The Atascadero girls tennis team played two home matches against Righetti High School just last week and continued their strong start by winning both matches and losing only two sets in total.
On Tuesday, the Greyhounds hosted the Warriors and earned an 8-1 victory. Atascadero traveled to Santa Maria on Thursday, changed the lineup, placed Noella Breitenbach at No. 1 and worked her way to a 9-0 victory without losing a set. Atascadero – Kayla Stokes, who plays No. 5 singles, had a perfect week. Stokes did not lose a match in either match, winning all four sets 6-0.
The AHS girls tennis team is 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the Mountain League this season.

Paso Robles
The Paso Robles Bears opened their football season Friday night with a Mountain League game against St. Louis. They were defeated 44-0 by the St. Joseph Knights. Friday’s game was the first for new head coach Matt Carroll, and it looks like he’s found his future man in Leo Kemp. Although the offense didn’t score any points on the first drive, the big back ran all night and collected 113 yards on 22 runs.
Paso Robles will try to bounce back from its Week 1 loss when it travels to the San Luis Obispo Tigers on Friday for the second of five consecutive league games.
PRHS baseball and softball also opened their season this Saturday with games against Nipomo. The boys hosted the Titans at Barnhart Field, while the girls were on the road.

The Bearcats softball team started the year with a dominant win, led by pitcher Jayden Ralston, who struck out 13 batters. Ralston allowed just three hits on the afternoon and added two RBI with a big hit in the fifth inning. First baseman Andy Deason also had an RBI in the fifth inning and was the only player on the day to score multiple hits going 2-for-4.
The Bearcats began their season under the lights with a 7-2 win over Nipomo. Carson Turnquist started on the mound for the Crimson Cats and pitched three scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Only four Bearcats pitched Saturday and combined to give up just two hits and no earned runs.
Offensively, it was a busy day for Paso Robles, as 11 different batters hit, but none of them got further than Drew Wade’s long ball in the fourth inning that passed the wall in centerfield. Christian Rowley and Austin Taylor each added two RBIs on the day.
The Bearcats cross country was back in action Saturday morning after a week off. Paso Robles took on Arroyo Grande in a two-mile match, but could not defeat the Eagles in both the boys and girls, losing 16-47 and 20-37, respectively.

Paso Robles was led by junior Charlotte Castelli, who finished third behind Taylor Jones and Jenna LeNay of Arroyo Grande with a time of 11:30.8. In addition to Castelli, three other members of the Lady Bears placed in the top 10: Madeline Loff (12:09.72) was fifth, Sydney Moore (12:43.02) eighth and Sophia Berry (12:56.19) tenth.
The Bearcats boys placed three runners in the top 10 on Saturday. Cameron LeClaire finished first and fifth in Paso Robles with a time of 10:25, followed by Ethan Short (10:49.59) and Diego Ortega (10:49.94), who finished ninth and 10th, respectively.
Templeton
The Templeton Eagles took on rival Morro Bay Friday afternoon in a 4,000-yard game on the Pirates’ home field. The two teams split the series this week, with the Eagle boys winning and the Eagle girls coming within three points.
As has been the case all season, Josh Bell was the best on his way to the overall win with a time of 12:50, but it was the strength of the entire boys team that was the story against Morro Bay. Templeton made it to the podium Friday with five riders in the top six. Jaden Buck (14:07) was second, followed by Nick Jansen (14:17) in third. Runners Maxa Chalexon (14:48) and Nikita Norton (14:54) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. The boys won with 17:54.
For the women, both teams agreed to compete with only four girls and calculate the points based on the top three from each team. It was a close race, but the Pirates won by a narrow margin. Maddie Bobbitt led the entire time and won her fifth consecutive race with a time of 15:33. Morro Bay was able to finish second, third and fourth, giving them a narrow 9-12 victory. Templeton’s Hannah McFarlane finished fifth (18:06), followed by Ava Larens (18:07) in sixth and Ashlyn Estes (18:54) in eighth.
The Templeton Eagles swim team also started the season with impressive records in the first two events, including a new school record. On Saturday, the 20th. In March, Templeton swam against San Luis Obispo High School and Brianna Griffiths broke the school record in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:11.87. Templeton hosted Morro Bay Friday, March 19, in a dual meet where the women’s team of Alice McIntyre, Griffiths, Claire Oppal and Jenna Sanders took first place. Each of the four girls in the medley relay also won first place in the individual events.
