Aston Martin has unveiled the car for four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel that will race in 2021.

Vettel will drive the returning Aston Martin this year alongside Lance Stroll, the son of team owner Lawrence.

Aston Martin is the renamed Racing Point team, formerly known as Force India. Apart from a couple of appearances in 1959 and 1960, the British marque did not appear as a manufacturer in Formula 1.

The team has chosen the traditional British racing green as the main colour of the livery, while retaining the pink accents that represent last year’s title sponsor, BWT.

The Mercedes-powered AMR21 should be a strong contender in the midfield, given Racing Point’s form last year, which included Sergio Perez’s victory in the Sahir Grand Prix.

New austerity measures for 2021 have limited the changes teams can make to their cars from last year. However, Andy Green, Aston Martin’s technical director, has confirmed that the team has used its permission, which is controlled by the FIA via the token system, to introduce a new chassis design.

Yes, it was a chassis change, but no, I can’t reveal why we changed the chassis, Green said.

He added that the development has been focused on adapting to the new aerodynamic regulations, which limit the size of the floor plate, rear brake ducts and diffuser blocks – an attempt by the FIA to reduce downforce and make the cars slower.

I think aerodynamics is the main driver, so there’s obviously a lot of emphasis on the aerodynamic side, Green said.

The rule change that occurred at the end of last year had a significant impact on the airline’s results, and we spent the winter recovering losses due to the rule change.

It was a lot of attention.

As a customer team, Aston Martin also has the right to adapt the gearbox and rear suspension of the 2019 Mercedes design to the specifications of last year’s world champions, without incurring development costs.

Green said it was part of the team’s long-term plan and should be a step in the right direction.

The benefit will hopefully show when we are on the field, Green added. This change was planned from the beginning, even before we implemented the rule changes to block cars and try to move as many cars as possible.

So we already agree, we already have an overview of the geometry of the changes. So we could start relatively early in this area.

I think we were comfortable with the gear change, because that’s essentially what it is: a gear change.

I think the hardest part was changing the aerodynamic rules afterwards. We had to react faster. None of this was planned, just like everyone else who was shocked by the FBI.

So I think that’s the most important aspect of what we’ve been looking at over the winter, which is the changes that the FIA has made, not the planned changes that we already had.

Team owner Lawrence Stroll has set his sights on the championship after investing heavily in a new factory at Silverstone, due to be completed in 2022.

Speaking about Aston Martin’s goal of becoming a title contender, team boss Othmar Safnauer said: It’s much easier to say we’re going to fight and win the championship than to actually do it.

There are two things that need to happen: First we have to have a good plan to start today and get to the World Cup contenders, and then we have to execute it.

We are currently in the planning stage, and implementation will certainly take some time.

People in Formula One, in other teams, have said that you have to give yourself three to five years to succeed and we are no different.

Last year we planned a new factory with new infrastructure in a place where we will all live under the same roof and where the team will grow. The implementation at Silverstone has just started and we should move into the new factory at the end of 2022.

And in this factory we need the most advanced tools to design and develop a car worthy of competing for the World Championship. That’s still a few years away.

If I look ahead, it will be in 3 to 5 years.

The Formula One season begins with the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 28, but at the same venue from March 12 to 14. A three-day test will take place in March.
