It’s getting worse for quarterback Sam Darnold and the New York Jets drones.
With his right shoulder still sick, Darnold won’t play against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. For the fourth time in six games he supports deputy Joe Flacco.
Darnold will be out indefinitely in the hope that the team can return to the field in the coming weeks, perhaps as early as week 12, with his throwing style.
I think it’s a wise decision not to play, Darnold said Monday. I think if you think about it, it should just heal. He must have the time. It’s kind of the way we think.
The news is especially worrisome for the jets (0-9), because they were hoping that Darnold would be healthy enough to take off after a rest period during the farewell week.
The organisation seems to adopt a more conservative approach than after the first trauma to the dislocated AC joint, which developed on 1 January 2009. October versus the Denver Broncos.
After surviving two games, Darnold came back to the team with the idea that he could handle the pain, he and the team said the risk was minimal. But he sharpened his shoulder at the end of November when he lost the knockout of Kansas City and hasn’t played since.
He was supposed to leave on the 9th. November against the New England Patriots, but Darnold broke after several shots on the 6. November out of training and complained of discomfort.
It certainly raises the question of whether he came back too soon. Darnold challenged the idea and said that with everything the doctors had told me, I thought it was a good decision to come back.
He said he was only sorry he didn’t slip out to avoid contact with the chiefs.
I’m very sure I’ll play this year, Darnold said. He guarantees that when I come back, I’ll be in good shape, so that if I fall on him or hit him, he won’t get hurt again.
Darnold has already started an interval throwing program that focuses on the volume and depth of throws. He started rehabilitating his shoulder last week.
According to coach Adam Gaza, there is no injury reserve at this stage.
We want to make sure he’s in a good position the next time he goes to court for training, the look said.
The look said there was hope that Darnold could come back sooner rather than later, but he wasn’t worried about week 12. The timing of the retirement is bad for the jets, who could face an important quarterback decision after the season.
Chances are they have a first or second choice in the 2021 draft, and the main prospects are Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields, both quarterbacks. CEO Joe Douglas recently gave Darnold a vote of confidence, but the third-year quarterback is in trouble.
In third place in 2018, Darnold went from 11 to 21, and his QBR (44.7) in that period – 36 of the 36 qualifying quarterbacks.
Also on Monday the Jets asked the Minnesota Vikings to withdraw from their obligations to line worker Pat Elflein. Elflein, the third race in 2017, which started 42 races, was released from the injury reserve on Saturday after activation. He injured his thumb for the second week of training. He can play both on guard and in an intermediate position.
