Today’s Nintendo Direct presentation concluded with a trailer for Splatoon 3, the latest installment in the online multiplayer franchise for Nintendo Switch. Although the game won’t be out until next year, Nintendo has begun revealing information about Splatoon 3 that didn’t surface during today’s presentation. The game will be set in a new region called Platlands. The desolate terrain seems inhospitable to the Inklings and Octolings, but both seem to thrive in the new town of Splattsville. This area is much more densely populated than Incopolis and has some distinct differences.

The final Splatfest of the original Splatoon played a part in Splatoon 2’s storyline, and it looks like this is the case for Splatoon 3 as well. Nintendo claims that development will continue at Splattsville following the release of Chaos vs. Order. Chaos reigned supreme in this league, which probably explains why Splattsville is called the City of Chaos. The place has its own culture that has influenced fashion and affordable hairdressing.

During their journey through the Platinum, Inklings and Octolings, they are joined by a new partner creature that the player can name. According to Nintendo, the creature is a junior salmon, known as smallfry. It’s not clear what role the creature will play in the game, but there seems to be a symbiotic relationship with the player. A short video of the creature can be found on Twitter, embedded below.

In a new video program, Inkling is featured with a young salmon named Little Fry. Our research has long shown that salmonids are a dangerous species. How this seemingly symbiotic relationship came to be is a fascinating mystery. More research is needed! pic.twitter.com/NXeTYkhk8m

The basic gameplay of the first Splatoon has remained largely intact. Players continue to participate in Turf Wars in two teams of four. This time, however, the cards in the deck appear to be placed in nature, unlike the interiors seen in the first two games. In the first two games of the Splatoon series, players started the game as a team in one location, while in the sequel, players can choose where they land with unmanned drones in the sky – the Splatoon Drones.

During these matches, the players have various weapons at their disposal. Returning weapons like the .96 Gal and Range Blaster get a new look, and there will be new weapons, including a bow that can fire three strands of ink at enemies. Players will also have new moves at their disposal, including Squid Roll, which allows the player to jump out of ink as they spin, and Squid Surge, which allows you to climb up walls faster, ending with a jump into the air when the top is reached.

So far, Splatoon 3 looks promising! It seems that the game is already showing significant differences from the last two entries, staying true to the roots of the franchise.
