An arrest warrant has been issued for Seattle Seahawks defensive end Aldon Smith for second-degree assault and battery in the New Orleans area Saturday night, confirmed St. Bernard County District Attorney Perry Nicosia.
Nicosia said Smith allegedly strangled the unconscious victim during an altercation that began at a coffee shop in Chalmette, Louisiana, and a day later the court signed an arrest warrant.
According to Nicosia, the alleged incident resulted in a second-degree assault, as the victim lost consciousness. He said the victim has been taken to the hospital, but is unlikely to stay there overnight.
In a press release, the St. Louis County District Attorney’s Office said Joseph. Bernarda said the alleged victim suffered serious injuries and the perpetrator, who was convicted of second-degree assault, faces a fine of up to $2,000 and/or up to eight years in prison.

Before returning to the field last season, Smith missed more than four seasons due to an indefinite suspension by the NFL for multiple off-field incidents and violations of the league’s substance abuse policy.
Smith made a name for himself with a record 33.5 sacks in his first two NFL seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, and that number has risen to a record 42 in three seasons. He was picked seventh overall in the 2011 NFL Draft.
But Smith was suspended from the field.
In 2013, he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after his truck collided with a tree in a residential area in San Jose, California. In 2014, he was suspended by the NFL for nine games for violating the league’s policy on personal conduct and substance abuse.
Smith was released by the Niners in August 2015, a day after he was arrested for hit-and-run, DUI and vandalism. A month later, he signed with the Raiders, but was suspended for a year for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
Smith was released by the Raiders in 2018 after being arrested on multiple charges, including domestic violence, assault and false imprisonment. Smith pleaded no contest in November 2018 to settle a domestic violence case he started earlier that year.
He was rehired last year and started all 16 games for the Cowboys after signing a one-year, $4 million contract. He had five pockets.
Last season, cornerback Quinton Dunbar was charged with armed robbery two months after the Seahawks acquired him in a trade. The NFL placed him on the commissioners’ exclusion list, but removed him from that list after the Broward (Fla.) District Attorney’s Office refused to file criminal charges against Dunbar due to insufficient evidence.
