Fantasy hockey – Forecaster for the week of April 19

In some cases it’s just a travesty in a box, but it’s all worth considering when it comes to new faces in new places. Let’s take a look at some of our traded deadlifters who already have many assets on their new teams.

Devan Dubnyk, G, Colorado Avalanche: Almost like a script: The Avs get a veteran as a back up, and then immediately have to break the emergency glass when starter Phillip Grubauer is on COVID for two weeks. That means Dubnyk and Jonas Johansson, 25, will have to guard the fort until May. Dubnyk’s protection percentage is .921 since the first. March is a respectable month. Plus, it’s much easier for the team with the highest Corsi value in the NHL (and it’s not even close) to court the twink. Not only do the Avs lead the league in SATs (number of shot attempts), but they also lead the league in allowing the fewest SATs in a game.

The Avalanche are suspended until next Thursday and will miss games against the Los Angeles Kings this weekend and the St. Louis Blues. St. Louis Blues Tuesday. Keep an eye on this situation.

Anthony Manta, W, Washington Capitals: Initial results indicate that this reboot was exactly what we needed for Manta. With two goals and an assist in two games with the Capitals, Mantha has exploded onto the fantasy waiver wire. Be quick, because it has gone from 60% borrowers to over 80% borrowers since Tuesday. He skates with Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie at even strength, but hasn’t been exposed to the top blocks yet (that could come with time).

Nikita Gusev, W, Florida Panthers: The best deal with Alexander Barkov and the best deal with Barkov, Jonathan Huberdeau and Patrick Hornqvist in his first game for the Panthers? Yes, please. It helps that the player he took over is not currently in action, as Carter Verhegge is injured for the week. But this immediate commitment is good news for Gusev’s fantasy prospects if you keep him for your team in the coming years.

Brandon Montour, DE, Florida Panthers: It’s troubling that the Panthers wanted to throw Gusev in and Montour didn’t. The quarterback of the game is usually more nuanced than just participating in the offense, so maybe he just needs to practice or get his feet wet. Either way, the Panthers can’t continue to rely on Keith Yandle and think the problem will solve itself, so look for Montour to get his chance sooner rather than later. After Aaron Ekblad’s injury, Yandle has the second longest power play time in the entire NHL and no points to his credit.

Jakub Vrana, W, Detroit Red Wings: In his debut for the Red Wings, Vrana was used on multiple lines and managed to score a goal. While this is a positive start, the outlook remains bleak due to the Red Wings’ overall offensive situation. It doesn’t look like they’ll have many four-goal nights (they’re last in the NHL with 2.27 goals per game), and there’s no clear line that Vrana needs to score to lead the league in scoring. Let’s put this aside as a good first game, and we plan to look at Vrana’s prospects again next season, when the Wings hopefully regroup.

Jeff Carter, Q/V, Pittsburgh Penguins: Carter, who rejected Jared McCann and Jason Zucker on debut, needs more to be a fantasy factor. He didn’t get the chance to perform at a high level right away, which will be his secret ingredient until Evgeni Malkin returns. So Carter can be ignored for now, but keep an eye on the Penguins’ lineup to see if he replaces McCann on the power play with Sidney Crosby, because that would make Carter interesting.

Taylor Hall, W, Boston Bruins: In two games, both with David Krejci and Craig Smith, one goal and 3.3 fantasy points. In the context of Hall’s season, this is a big win. As part of his development as a fantastic elite asset for an extended period, the jury is still out. I think we’ll see a Hall banger next week when the Bruins visit the Sabres, who have three games in four days.

Predictor Fantasy : 19. April-25. April

Busy week, but sometimes we have an easier schedule. The Anaheim Ducks, Edmonton Oilers and Washington Capitals only play twice, while all other teams play three or four times. The Vancouver Canucks are expected to return to action this weekend after another delay. We’ll see what happens, but the impact will spread to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames and Ottawa Senators if more changes are made.

For those who are not familiar with the synoptic table, here is some explanation: O (Offense), left behind each matchup, and D (Defense), right, matchup grades are based on a scale of 1 (poor matchup) to 10 (excellent matchup) and are calculated using a formula that evaluates the team’s season statistics, home and away performance based on the location of the match, and opponent grades in those categories. The Rankings column shows the cumulative rankings from 1 to 10 games of the week for both offense (O) and defense (D).

Dallas Stars: Like the New York Rangers this week, the Stars will play the same underachieving team four times next week. If the Rangers’ early success against the Devils this week (two shutouts) is any indication, the formula is working. The Stars play the Detroit Red Wings four times over the next week, so make sure you have energy. That includes Jason Robertson, who is available in over 50% of ESPN leagues and is currently a top performer on the line with Joe Pavelski and Rope Hinz. This week, Jake Ettinger could get two of his four starts in goal, making him attractive for sporadic fantasy assignments.

Calgary Flame: It’s been a minute since Elias Lindholm and Johnny Gaudreau teamed up, even in a power play. They now have three games combined, but their five-on-five ice time is just 130 minutes this season (per NaturalStatTrick.com). The success they – and Sean Monahan – had in 2018-19 left me scratching my head all season as to why they hadn’t reunited earlier. This time, Matthew Tkachuk is the third to contribute, but we can’t wait to see if Godreau and Lindholm produce something fantastic. Lindholm and Gaudreau each have four points in three games since joining forces. Assuming things return to normal for the Canucks next week, the Flames have four games in which they can do fantastic damage. And perhaps for the first time in a long time, we’re assuming Gaudreau should be in the lineup with confidence.

Player notes

Ryan Ellis, D, Nashville Predators: I just want to point out that Ellis is back in business. He doesn’t always perform well, and his long absence due to injury has caused him to drop in many leagues. You shouldn’t do that. His fantasy points per game are in the top 40 among defenders, which directly correlates to his daily contributions. Not flashy, but a solid one that will get your team going, available in 30% of leagues.

Mike Reilly, D, Boston Bruins: Want to know that there are not one, but two new faces on the Bruins power play on Thursday? With Matt Grzelcyk still out (but with Charlie McAvoy, mind you), Riley kept the blue line occupied for Patrice Bergeron, David Pasternak, Brad Marchand and Taylor Hall. He was also with the first team on Tuesday. McAvoy is not the first choice for this power play when the team has other options, and I can’t say for sure that Riley will remain a choice when Grzelcyk is healthy, but for now Riley is in play.
