It’s been five years since Cristiano Ronaldo left Old Trafford for the Bernabeu in a world record £80m move after nine seasons with the Red Devils. After everything he’d achieved, it was hard to believe that Ronaldo would leave but that’s exactly what happened. The Madrid outfit also offered him bonuses of £30m each year, which he couldn’t turn down.

Gary Wilson enjoyed a fantastic run to the British Open final, but his loss left him “devastated” (Photo: Getty Images). )

Gary Wilson was left “devastated” after losing the British Open final to Mark Williams, believing he never played his best snooker and continues to be frustrated by his inability to consistently produce his A game.

Wilson reached his second ranking final, which is a fantastic achievement, but he struggled throughout the tournament, especially in the final, when he was defeated 6-4.

The 36-year-old hit four century at the Leicester tournament, but he is always dissatisfied with himself for not being able to consistently replicate his brilliant best form.

Wilson told Metro.co.uk, ‘I was absolutely heartbroken at the conclusion of the game.’ ‘I knew I hadn’t really played my game since I was struggling for the most of it.

‘It’s definitely difficult for folks to comprehend since they’re accustomed to seeing us s**t. But I know how I can play, how I’ve played in the past, and what I can create; all I have to do now is execute it on a consistent basis.

‘It was a fantastic chance, Mark Williams stepped up his game, he’s a terrific champion, so good credit to him,’ says the winner. ‘However, I was sad.’

Snooker players at all levels strive for consistency, and significant swings in performance annoy virtually every professional outside of the top tier.

Wilson’s emotions aren’t new, but he may take comfort in the fact that he’s reached another ranking final without feeling like he’s nearing the pinnacle of his abilities.

‘It’s something I’ve battled with for the most of my career, something I’ve had to fight with,’ he said. ‘My level is clearly good enough to perform well, and it gives you confidence that I can do well with my B and C games; it’s just frustrating that I can’t consistently produce my A game.’

‘I didn’t feel like I did in that tournament at all, but if I can rediscover it, I believe I can win tournaments.’

‘It gives you some hope that I made it to the final despite not feeling well at all; all I want to do now is go into the latter rounds of the tournament and feel confident in my game, knowing that I can win it rather than simply cling on.’

Wilson admits that reaching the British Open final makes him feel “glass half empty,” but he says it’s a sensation that comes from knowing what he’s capable of, and he finds it difficult to enjoy the game when he’s not at his best.

He said, ‘People assume I’m harsh on myself, but I’m a lot more philosophical than that.’ ‘I’m just being honest; I’m not picking on myself for the purpose of picking on myself; I know what I’m capable of, and I’m not doing it, so it’s irritating.

‘Perhaps I’m simply too honest in interviews, but I can only say what I believe, and if I think I’m playing crap, I’ll say it.’

Wilson cruised through his first three games in Leicester, winning all three 3-0, before advancing to the final by defeating Hossein Vafaei, Dave Gilbert, and his close friend Elliot Slessor.

Wilson’s early opponents included Stephen Hendry, but the seven-time world champion believes Wilson still has a long way to go before he is ready to win his maiden championship.

Stephen Hendry

When asked whether the Tyneside Terror could win a ranking tournament, Hendry told ITV: ‘Not at the level he’s playing at the moment.’

‘I believe he will have to improve.’ The Shoot Out is a ranking competition, therefore you can’t claim he won’t participate. I don’t believe he’s yet at the level to compete with Williams.’

Wilson, frustrated by his results, understands why the Scot has that view, and although he believes he is talented enough to win a trophy, he also understands that he must prove himself.

Wilson said of Hendry’s remarks, “I completely understand where he’s coming from and it’s reasonable that he’s stated that.” ‘Obviously, Stephen isn’t as familiar with me as other people are, and he hasn’t seen how I can play.’

‘He’ll have seen me go to the Crucible semi-finals and the occasional other run, but he doesn’t know what I’m capable of because he hasn’t seen it on a regular basis, and it’s up to me to show it to myself, him, and everyone that I can do it on a daily basis.’ I can’t expect people to believe I can win tournaments if I haven’t shown it.

‘I would have been surprised if he said that if I had played really well throughout the tournament and had just been defeated by a great performance, but I can’t disagree with him.’

Wilson is trying hard to overcome his irritation, as he wants to enjoy his snooker rather than feel like he is fighting himself as much as his opponent on the table.

He wants to spend a lot of time on the practice table and enjoy himself off the table, and he believes that path will take him to his first championship in the near future.

‘There comes a point when you can only repeat it so many times,’ he said. ‘I’m sure people are sick of hearing it, and I’m sick of saying it myself, but maybe I’ll be able to go there and put that behind me.’

‘I want to be able to appreciate events, but telling oneself to enjoy something is difficult; you can’t simply do it.

‘I need to keep working hard in practice and see what I can come up with.’ Work hard and play hard is my current motto, because if you’re happy off the table, you’ll be happy on it.

‘It’s near, but I’m not feeling very well.’ If I can feel well, I know I can win a tournament, and winning a tournament is the objective this season.’

Wilson has mostly overcome his mental health issues that he was experiencing at the start of the year, which is a big positive.

Wilson was despondent when problems with his house’s construction went on for two years, forcing him and his fiancée to dwell in rooms that he described as “upside down,” while they also suffered financially.

Thankfully, that problem is no longer an issue, as he explained: ‘The home is almost finished, there are only a few things left to complete, but it’s not on my mind as it was last year.’

‘I was never really thinking about it during matches since I could concentrate then, but it was all the time I wasn’t playing around the stadium and in the hotel.’

‘Focusing during matches is insufficient, as shown by the results. That’s done now, and with a strong start to the season, I should be able to relax and enjoy the games.

‘Having some decent money early in the season relieves some of the burden of qualifying for the Grand Prix and, ideally, the Players Championship, allowing me to concentrate on winning an event.’

Wilson will compete in the English Open qualifications on September 18th.
