Derek Hough Pays Tribute to Dick Van Dyke With Kennedy Center Honors Dances

The dance world lost a legend on April 6, 2018, when Dick Van Dyke finally passed away. He was best known for his role in the comedy series “The Dick Van Dyke Show” (1963–66), where he played Rob Petrie, a Minnesota businessman, and for his role as a live-action cartoon character in “The Carol Burnett Show” (1967–78), where he played Pee Wee Herman. However, he was also a respected figure in the world of jazz dance, where he was a dancer with New York City Ballet (1986–98) and a performer with the Joffrey Ballet (1993–99). He was also the founder of his own dance company, the Van Dyke and Company

Derek Hough, who is best known for his dancing on Dancing With The Stars, has just been nominated for a Dance Legend Award at the Kennedy Center Honors. The award recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the world of dance.

In a show of respect and appreciation for Dick Van Dyke, dancer and Dancing with the Stars alum, Derek Hough, who is taking on the role of host, has honored the late actor with a tribute and solo dance number at the show’s finale. The entertainment icon was one of the guests of honor at the 2021 Kennedy Center Awards. Ms. Hough, who is no stranger to awards with two Emmy Awards and a record six Dancing with the Stars trophies, pulled out all the stops (and put on a happy face) to pay tribute to the 95-year-old legend with two great songs and dances. Hough, 36, even got a recommendation from Van Dyke himself. In a video posted on Hough’s Instagram page, Van Dyke admired the Mary Poppins dancer’s moves and was shocked to learn that the Dancing with the Stars veteran had only been practicing those moves for a few days. What a pleasure to perform at the @kennedycenter in honor of an absolute legend, Hough captioned. Dick Van Dyke has been entertaining us for decades. And playing for him on his special night, seeing his face light up as he played filled me with such joy. It’s such an honor. So what are the numbers Hough mentioned?

Van Dyke wore a bushy white beard, as he did in real life, to remind the banker Mr. Dyke of his past. Dawes has to play. In one of the most memorable scenes in Van Dyke’s Oscar-winning film, Bert and other chimney sweeps dance and sing on the rooftops of London. More than 55 years later, Van Dyke’s iconic performance in the original Mary Poppins film was also remembered when Hough and a team of dancers performed a new version of Step in Time in her honor. The outdoor area offered views of the Potomac River from the rooftop and featured songs by Laura Osnes, Aaron Thwaite and Pentatonix. This isn’t the first time Hough has played Mary Poppins in the manner of Van Dyke. To the wonderful world of Disney: Disneyland 60, which aired on ABC in 2016, he performed a rousing dance number from the iconic Disney film. Van Dyke, who was 90 years old at the time, made a surprise appearance on stage and even joined Howe in kneeling for an updated version of the dance, Broadway World reported. In addition to Hough’s rendition of Van Dyke, the Kennedy Center’s other guests of honor – Debbie Allen, Garth Brooks, Joan Baez and Midori – were honored by Vanessa Hudgens, Kelly Clarkson, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Emmylou Harris and Yo-Yo Ma, reports Vulture.
